Love Or Lose Lockwood?

Ironically, "Woody" Lockwood shares the nickname with one of the followers of the labor movement he disparages in his May 1997 column, "When the Wobblies Wobbled." As Woody Guthrie has recorded, the Wobblies fought up and down this state for working conditions we now take for granted: the eight hour day, the right to collectively bargain, healthy workplaces and basic civil rights like free speech.

In his sophomoric ranting, Mr. Lockwood makes light of one of the darker chapters in San Diego police and legal history. Laughing as vigilantes kidnap, beat and maim people trying to organize for civil rights and labor justice, Mr. Lockwood celebrates a repressive regime of police thuggery and high-ranking legal complicity. Fortunately, you overcome the disgusting tone of Mr. Lockwood's drivel with a wonderful piece on Jerry Butkiewicz. I suggest that future issues of San Diego Metropolitan leave Mr. Lock-wood and his poor attempts at historical humor in the dustbin.

On the strength of a cover featuring Patti Roscoe (April 1997), I picked up a copy of San Diego Metropolitan. I was impressed! I really enjoyed Herb Lockwood's column. Also, it was great to have an article by Brage Golding, a wonderful man. All in all, an excellent magazine. Best of luck.

Thanks, Thanks & Thanks

Due to your exceptional generosity, the University City Foundation for Public Schools was honored to award educational grants to all five public schools in the Golden Triangle.

The grants, totaling $23,642, covered a broad range of educational activities and were awarded directly to the teachers whose grant proposals were recommended for funding by the Foundation's Allocations Committee.

I’m an ex-Chula Vistan who attended high school in San Diego. While visiting there last week, I picked up a copy of your magazine - really liked it. Several great articles: If a magazine holds my attention for more than 30 minutes, it’s good. Thanks! Check enclosed for a year’s subscription.

I just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed San Diego Metropolitan Magazine. Being new to the area, I find it very beneficial in finding interesting restaurants. I especially like the unique way Terryl Gavre writes her reviews. I can almost savor the foods as she describes them.

I find your other articles interesting as well.
