    Charles Bird, loyal partner with Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps, half the brilliant stand-up routine before Judge Anthony Joseph and the pensive writer with the "Last Word" in November's Metropolitan, has been named to the state Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission by the Board of Governors of the State Bar. City Attorney Casey Gwinn was the other half.

    Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch hired Theodore J. Griswold in its environmental law group. He previously worked for Best Best & Krieger.

    Once San Diego’s most senior corporate counsel, Ann Parode finds herself in the newly created position of campus counsel at UCSD. She was previously executive v.p., general counsel and corporate secretary of San Diego Financial Corp., parent of San Diego Trust & Savings, leaving somewhat exasperated upon the First Interstate sale.

    Patricia Tennyson has been named v.p., director of client relations for big-water consultant Katz & Associates. She previously was director of public affairs for the San Diego County Water Authority.

    William Buchanan joined Barney & Barney as account executive in the Professional Liability Dept. He previously worked in a similar capacity for Aon Risk Services Inc.

    Filling two new positions at Oster & Associates are Mary Rosenberg, account services director, and Alexandra Lutticken, p.r. assistant.

    Lina Pitesa Waage joined the litigation department of Sullivan Wertz McDade & Wallace.

    Marlene Meis joined Grossmont Bank as a private banking officer. Most recently with Home Savings, Meis is assigned to the new Emerald Plaza office Downtown.
    Also at Grossmont Bank, Sandy Apodaca, formerly with Union Bank of California, is customer service manager for the new Carlsbad office.

    Peninsula Bank of San Diego promoted Laura Baker to administrative officer in its Operations Center.

    Bank of Commerce promoted Gary Cristofani to executive v.p./CFO. He joined the bank in 1994 as CFO. Also at BofC, Melissa Rockoff has been promoted to v.p. of human resources. She joined the bank in 1988 as a secretary.

    Joanne Williams of N.N. Jaeschke Inc. achieved the Certified Manager of Community Associations professional designation, one of just some 1,200 managers nationwide to do so.

    Robert Geiler joined the corporate office of General Mortgage Corp. as a mortgage consultant. He most recently was with TCS Mortgage.

    Neel Keller joined La Jolla Playhouse as artistic associate. He formerly worked at Remains Theatre.

    Michael Magedman moved from direct sales to publicity assistant at the Old Globe Theatre. He replaces Sandra Wagner, who is now handling public relations for the San Diego Museum of Art. The Globe also has hired Gary Holt as finance director.

    Dave Carothers (McInnis, Fitzgerald, Rees & Sharkey), Brenda Schumacher (Fresh Dish Productions) and Thomas Lidot (Indian Health Council) are new to the board of San Diego Foundation for Change, a grassroots organization promoting social justice.

    Pam Pettee, formerly with Ensemble Arts Theatre, is new business manager of Mainly Mozart. Other new staff include Matt Boden, operations manager, and Brandy Ramirez, administrative assistant.

    Frederico (Fred) Sainz is the new v.p. of public policy for the San Diego Chamber. He was a deputy assistant manager for the 1996 Republican National Convention.

    Douglas L. Hemer has been appointed president of Aetrium Inc.'s SymTek Division. Hemer previously was Aetrium's CAO. He succeeds Lawrence J. Klassen, who resigned.

    Qualcomm Inc. appointed James DeBello as its first Eudora Division v.p. and assistant g.m.

    Thomas Jefferson School of Law Professor William R. Slomanson was honored by the city of San Diego at the 31st annual Local Authors Exhibit. He has written six books since 1989.

    Robert A. Hoehn (Hoehn Motors Inc. and The Hoehn Co.), Ronald L. Fowler (Liquid Investments Inc.) and Michael T. Thorsnes (Thorsnes, Bartolotta, McGuire & Padilla) have been elected to USD's board.

    Carole Fish joined Children's Hospital Foundation as senior managing director of philanthrophy. She previously served as v.p. for Scripps Hospital Foundation.

    Carl Geddes of Credit Link received a "Key Award" from the Institute of Real Estate Management, San Diego chapter.

    Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps honored five employees for 20 years of service: Kathy Caudillo, records management supervisor, Melinda Freese, Environmental Practice Group paralegal, Anne Garber and Barbara Specht, Insurance and Reinsurance Practice Group secretaries, and Linda Williams, legal support staff supervisor.

    San Diego Defense Lawyers named Mike Neil, a founder of Neil, Dymott, Perkins, Brown & Frank, Trial Lawyer of the Year.

    At Pillsbury Madison & Sutro, T. Michael Hird has made partner and Daniel S. Silverman senior counsel.

    Voices for Children appointed Sharon M. Lawrence as executive director. She previously was a trial attorney for Lewis, D'Amato, Brisbois & Bisgaard.

    Terence J. Keating (Professional Employer Options), has been elected to the board of California Assn. of Professional Employer Organizations.

    Dr. Curtis W. Cook has been named dean-elect of the USD School of Business Administration. Currently associate dean and professor of management at the College for Business at San Jose State University, he succeeds the school's founding dean, Dr. James M. Burns, who will step down at the end of the 1996-97 academic year.

    Bob Burke joined Ryland Homes' San Diego-Riverside division as manager of newly formed Ryland ReSource, a professional resale assistance service for new home buyers.

    San Diego Port Tenants Assn. elected H. P. "Sandy" Purdon (H. P. Purdon & Co.), as chairman. He takes over for Art Engel (Southwest Marine) who had led the association since July 1994.
    Also elected were Joe Hall (Solar Turbines), vice chairman; and Robert McKay (Robert McKay and Associates), treasurer.

    Stellcom Technologies hired Loring Spitler as project manager. He previously was with Sharp HealthCare and Unisys Corp. Mary Flores has been appointed branch builder specialist for the San Diego office of the National Builder Div. of Countrywide Home Loans Inc.

    Jill Phinney joined Di Zinno Thompson Integrated Marketing Solutions as account supervisor. She previously owned and operated Smart Street.

    Jeff A. Washington joined Douglas E. Barnhart Inc. as project manager for the City Heights Urban Village Project.

    Top winners in the San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers 1996 Design Excellence Award contest were Jlorene Gage (Creative Adaptations Design Studio), Kathleen M. Zbacnik (Kathleen Zbacnik Interior Design), Linda S. Kaufman (Linda S. Kaufman & Assoc.), Karen Kohlberg and Cynthia House (Design With A Purpose), LeAnne Roberts Burger (Linda S. Kaufman & Assoc.) and student Karen L. Lampard.
    In addition, Carol G. Brown (Design Partners) earned the Ethel Siegelman Award and Shelley Goren (Forever Florals) received the Industry Foundation Award.

    Larry Bogle has been appointed first v.p. of Retail Properties Group Inc. He previously served as v.p. of Voit Commercial Brokerage.

    John Elliott (Roel Construction Co.), has been installed as president of the San Diego Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America. Other officers are Dave Atkinson (L.R. Hubbard Construction Co.), senior v.p., Scott Erreca (Erreca's), v.p., and Steve Thompson (Soltek of San Diego), secretary/treasurer. New board members are Nigel Cary (Cox Construction Co.), John Krueger (Taylor Ball), Peter Filanc (J.R. Filanc Construction Co.), and Mike Furby (Marathon Construction Corp.)
    Also at ASG, Wendy Swift (CCMS) has been honored with the AGC Affiliate Golden Award, Soltek of San Diego as General Building Contractor of the Year, L.R. Hubbard Construction Co. as General Engineering Contractor of the Year, and Bannister Steel as Specialty Contractor of the Year.

    Bijan R. Kian, former head of the California Office of Foreign Investment, joined Global Capital Markets Inc. as a principal.
