Bravo! Alan Nevin's article in the San Diego Metropolitan (April 1998, "The Evils of the RTC"), is concise and accurate as to the results of an over-zealous Congress meddling in free enterprise. Clearly, FIRREA was an over-reaction to headliners like Charles Keating, which were the exception and not the rule. It is my thought, however, that "the match that started the blaze" was really the Tax Reform Act of 1986. Any thoughts? William C. Tuchscher
Nevin Responds: It was the Tax Act of 1981 that caused tremendous tax-driven overbuilding and over investment in real estate. The 1986 Act turned off the spigot and mitigated the damages of supply/demand imbalances. With the supply cut off in 1986, the overbuilding/S&L problem would have cured itself without FIRREA. Take Me Out To The Ballpark I want to voice my support for a new "baseball only" stadium for the San Diego Padres. I believe a new intimate stadium would be a large draw for baseball, regardless of the Padres' record. One only has to look at the attendance at the newer stadiums for the Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, and Colorado Rockies to see what a difference it makes when most every fan gets "close to the game." A big difference between baseball and football is that baseball has 82 home games compared to 8 (regular season) home games for football. The beneficial economic impact 82 home dates would have in an urban setting, such as Downtown, could only accelerate and expand the positive transformation that is taking place in our city core. Rick E. Poe I am writing to let you know of my support for a "baseball only" stadium for the San Diego Padres (and other appropriate users). I feel the new stadium will have a very strong positive economic impact on the city of San Diego. Ross Ehrhardt I would just like to express my support for a new "baseball only" ballpark in the Downtown area. I am an avid fan who enjoys taking my family to the games. The Padres stress a safe environment and positive experience for my family. Gregory Jones |
