Dan Pegg, who spent 14 years as president of the San Diego Economic Development Corp. before joining Qualcomm 20 months ago, is moving on — but not too far. Pegg, Qualcomm's senior v.p. of public affairs, is joining SpinCo, a new company being spun off by Qualcomm to take and operate the Q's joint ventures in wireless phone companies around the world. (Digital wireless equipment, not service, is Qualcomm's future.) SpinCo should get a "real" name this month and word should be released on which 30 or so Q employees are moving over. The leader already has been named: Harvey White, a Qualcomm founder, is SpinCo's president, chairman and CEO. Pegg's title stays the same. The ties between the San Diego Chamber and Gov. Pete Wilson grow. The latest link comes with the naming of Michael Magee as senior v.p. of public policy. Magee worked with Wilson for nearly a decade, most recently as director of the governor's San Diego office. At the chamber he reports to Ben Haddad, president, CEO and a former Wilson Cabinet secretary. Lee Grissom, who ran the chamber for more than a decade, is Wilson's Trade and Commerce Secretary. Continuing to beef up its San Diego team, Gateway has hired Peter Ashkin as v.p. of engineering. Ashkin moves south from Irvine where he worked as v.p. and g.m. at Toshiba America Information Systems. In San Diego he reports to Jim Collas, senior v.p. of product development and management.
Promoted to v.p. responsible for developing high-tech pr and advertising programs at the Townsend Agency is Sue Hetzel. The new chair of the State Bar's Personal and Small Business Bankruptcy Law Advisory Commission is Scott Ehrlich, associate dean for administration of California Western School of Law. Three promotions at Barney & Barney were to Dick Rohde, at the company for 23 years, principal and former commercial property and casualty manager to Director of Growth, Opportunities and Development; Kathy Ybarrondo, employee benefits department principal to director of the Employee Benefits Group; and Paul Hering, principal, to Director of the Property and Casual Group. Clarke A. Caines was appointed v.p., general manager for Nextlink California's San Diego office. This new position was created to meet Nextlink's opening of full service telecommunications services in the county early in 1999. Veteran land planner Chuck Cater was appointed project manager at the Otay Ranch Co., developer of the 5,300-acre Otay Ranch in the South Bay. He has 20 of years experience in land development and public works engineering. Patrick J. Rohan is a new senior v.p. specializing in suburban office and high-tech properties with John Burnham & Company * Oncor International. Over the past 18 years, he has negotiated more than $600 million in commercial real estate transactions in the county. Another new senior v.p. is Pete Bethea, a shopping center specialist.
Promoted to v.p., human resources officer for Scripps Bank was Donna Ohs. She has been with Scripps Bank since 1993. Stoorza Design and Advertising hired Simone Sato as creative director. Sato recently was honored at the San Diego Addys where she received 27 accolades including Best of Show. Also hired was art director Lawrence Baltutis, a recipient of a Double Silver Palette Award. Craig S. Andrews, a partner with the law firm of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison is the new Honorary Consul of Denmark in San Diego. He replaces W. Daniel Larsen, who held the position for 34 years. Golden Eagle Insurance Corp. appointed Deborah Kammeyer as field territorial manager for Southern California. With the company since 1994, she is in a newly created position established to enhance service. Tamara Smith-Mcleod, a 20-year veteran in the public relations field, was named director of professional development for SDSU's College of Extended Studies. Fine tuning its plan to open 100 stores by the year 2000, Rubio's Restaurants Inc. has added COO to the title of Stephen Sather, the company’s v.p. of operations. Named as director of the U N TradePoint-San Diego is Steven Rynecki, the former public relations manager for the World Trade Center-San Diego. Rynecki has 10 years of international experience. Penny Allen, owner and president of Allen & Co., was elected 1998-99 president of the Downtown San Diego Rotary Club. An active member since 1988, Allen has been secretary and treasurer of the club, in addition to holding several chairmanships. Ardy Shaw, manager of the county's new Reserve Deputy Probation Officer program, recruits, trains and assigns volunteers who work with deputy probation officers. She was previously with the Union-Tribune in community relations. Gary Erbeck this month becomes county director of Environmental Health. He comes from Santa Barbara County where he held the same position since 1990. He will lead a department of more than 300 employees. H. Wesley Pratt was appointed CEO of the Urban Corps of San Diego, an organization modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps to provide crew-based community service work experience with education and job training for people 18 to 24. A partner in the law firm of Kemp and Pratt, he is leaving private practice to lead the organization he started while on the San Diego City Council. Three new executive directors in the Business Improvement District system are Shelley Miller, first executive director, Pacific Beach; Sami Jihad, first executive director, College BID; and Bill Lyons, new executive director, Diamond BID. San Diego has 16 business improvement districts. Praja Inc., an innovator in immersive sports and entertainment software for the Internet, has added three new employees: Craig Knox, business development manager; Eric Otterson, business development representative; and Brenda Sullivan, public relations manager. Knox is relocating from San Francisco where he worked for Cidco Inc. and Parametric Technology Corp. Otterson hails from Wright Strategies and Quarterdeck. Sullivan worked as communications director for the National Safe Kids Campaign in Washington, D.C. Moving up the ladder at Valle de Oro Bank is Dottie Hart, promoted to assistant v.p. and operations officer. She's a four-year employee of the bank. Newly elected president of the Palomar Branch of the National League of Pen Women is Carol Ann Lindsay, an award-winning poet of Carlsbad. Coldwell Banker named sales associate Jim DeNicholas assistant branch manager of the Coronado Island branch office, capping a real estate career of more than 15 years. Anthony N. DeMaria, M.D., in July began serving as board president for the American Heart Association's Greater San Diego Division. He is Professor of Medicine and Chief, Division of Cardiology at UCSD. Chairman of the Heart Association board is Martin B. Buser, group president and founding member of Cove Healthcare, based in La Jolla. Joining West & Associates CPA and consulting firm is Julie A. Turner, human resource consultant. Case Group Architects added John Eisenhart to its staff to participate in a company-planned move from production housing into urban residential, resorts and other new areas. Mayor Susan Golding appointed Ric Grenell press secretary. He replaces MaryAnne Pintar as the day-to-day primary contact for the media. Peninsula Bank promoted Sandra Sheffield to assistant v.p., loan administration. She has worked in commercial lending for 18 years, 10 of them with Peninsula. Russell Pierce joined McMahon Development Group as an associate and director of acquisitions and marketing. Previously he was a senior v.p. and sales manager with Grubb & Ellis. Three representatives of the national consulting firm of David Evans and Associates Inc. working here are Karen Ruggles, planning and environmental manager of the San Diego office; Robert G. Furey, engineering project manager; and Larry Walton, project engineer. Promoted to v.p. of Nelson Communications Group was Kevin L. Faulconer, who joined the firm in 1996 with a background in community relations and public affairs. Named president and CEO of San Diego’s Consumer Credit Counseling Service was Jack Thompson, a native San Diegan and a long-time business entrepreneur. Carlsbad resident Cindi Hill was elected board president for ElderHelp of San Diego, a nonprofit social services agency designed to help seniors remain independent in their own homes. Joining the Vista Hill Foundation's executive management team as v.p., operations and program development, was Donald Allen. He has been a mental health care administrator in the county for 27 years. David Casey, a San Diego attorney who represents injured consumers, was elected parliamentarian of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He is a partner in the law firm of Casey, Gerry, Reed & Schenk. Named president and CEO of the Kleinfelder engineering firm was Gerald J. Salontai.With 25 years of engineering experience, Salontai has been with Kleinfelder for 17 years. Orincon Corp. appointed Thomas P. O'Hara new CFO, v.p. of finance, administration and human resources. O'Hara has held the same title for more than seven years in the high-tech/biotech industry. Joseph A. Banos joined RF Industries, LTD. as president and general manager of its RF Neulink Telemetry Division. He formerly was president of RF Industries' predecessor company, Celltronics, Inc. Alexia Brown was appointed In-House Corporate Counsel by International Data Response Corp. She previously was a corporate associate with Cooley Godward, LLP in Palo Alto. Ben Heyward Jr. joined Point Loma Federal Credit Union as new senior v.p. of operations. He most recently served as v.p. for operations for Auburn University Federal Credit Union in Auburn, Ala. Presley Homes named Debbie Prescott as community sales manager at The Shores in Torrey Hills. She has worked with Presley projects in Carlsbad, Carmel Mountain Ranch, San Marcos and Temecula. The patent, trademark and copyright law firm of Baker & Maxham welcomes Peter Martinez, Christopher Sears and Steven Robbins as associates. Joining Johnson & Jennings General Contracting as a project manager is Dave Hoffman. He has been in the construction industry for 15 years. With a goal of building bridges with the Hispanic community, the Timken Museum of Art retained Lisette Atala-Doocy as consulting Hispanics programs coordinator. She was founder and executive director of the Mexican Cultural Institute of San Diego. Michael L. Jensen returned to the national law firm of Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps as a partner in the Labor and Employment Law Practice Group. He left the firm in 1995, after 11 years, to accept a call to serve for three years as the president of the Germany Frankfurt Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Two new employees hired by Roel Construction Co.'s General Construction Group for various Qualcomm projects are Carol Winton, project administrative assistant, and Todd Middleton, project engineer. Bill Winston, who joined Ryland Homes' San Diego-Riverside division in 1997, was promoted to sales and marketing manager. When the Star of India sailed last month, she was in the hands of new master Capt. Richard Goben of Hornblower Cruises & Events. He sailed as crew and first mate on eight of the ship's nine modern voyages. He has been port captain for Hornblower for eight years. Tim Schutte was named executive v.p. to head a new Carlsbad office of Crown American Bank, a thrift and loan opened by Imperial Bancorp specifically for small business financing. He has been with Imperial Bank since 1992. The Million Dollar Advocates forum welcomed attorney J. Daniel Holsenback of La Jolla as a certified member. Only attorneys who achieve a verdict or settlement of $1 million or more are eligible. Joining the Willis Allen Co. real estate office in La Jolla is Elizabeth A. Courtier. Her expertise is in the marketing and sale of historic properties in La Jolla, Mission Hills and surrounding communities. City National Bank named Brian K. Constable v.p, and manager of its North County banking office opened in June in Carlsbad. With 13 years of experience in banking, he was most recently with Home Savings of America. Kyocera America Inc. appointed Doug Allday to v.p. of KMX Operations. In this newly created position, he will oversee the firm's growing ceramic package manufacturing operation in Mexico. Jonathan G. Thorpe was named a senior v.p. for Gale & Wentworth California, the West Coast subsidiary of a New Jersey-based real estate services and investment firm. Thorpe has been with the company since 1985. Pacific Incubation Network named Tyler Orion as interim executive director. Orion, who is director of Orion Enterprise Development, will head an organization designed to assist early-stage and emerging businesses. Jay Norris was appointed v.p., technical services, of Advanced Personnel Systems Inc., which he joined in 1997. Don Taylor became v.p., commercial banking for Capital Bank of North County and works out of the Village Faire office. His banking career began in 1972. Newly hired by David Evans and Associates Inc. for the engineering design of border projects is Roberto Yano, who has experience with development in California and Mexico. Formerly with The Gable Group, John Cihomsky has joined Matthews Mark MacCracken McGaugh as an account supervisor. In public relations for more than a decade, he will help manage the firm's p.r. division. Terrance A. Meador has joined the firm as a partner at Gray Cary Ware Freidenrich. He has practiced trademark and patent law for 15 years, and most recently he was with Baker Maxham Jester and Meador. Julie Heyser joined Brookfield Homes' San Diego/Riverside division as escrow coordinator. She held the same job with California Pacific Homes for more than 10 years. The BioGenesis Group, a San Diego-based marketing and educational company, promoted Jamie Balis to v.p., account group supervisor in its BioGenesis Communications subsidiary. |
