Congratulations and Condolences

    Veteran bank marketing man Dan Conway is available, his position as Wells Fargo's director of public relations in San Diego having been moved to Los Angeles. Conway came to Wells Fargo in 1990 when the bank bought the remnants of the once-great Great American S&L from the federal government. Conway joined Great American just 30 days before the Wells purchase. He worked from Fashion Valley offices that for years functioned as Wells Fargo's administrative hub for the region. Conway found San Diego while serving as a Department of Commerce's spokesperson for all counties south of Los Angeles during the 1990 census.


Conway
    Qualcomm Inc. named Phil White president of its Wireless Business Solutions, and David Brandos as v.p. of marketing Previously senior v.p. and g.m., White has been with Qualcomm since 1987. Brandos, with 25 years in the business, moves from Qualcomm's Wireless Infrastructure Division.

    Michael Brekka joined Intracorp, the San Diego real estate development company, as v.p. of urban residential development. He was formerly with the Corky McMillin Cos. An architect, Brekka has been in real estate development for more than 15 years.

Tanner

    Greg Tanner, a nine-year employee, was promoted to assistant treasurer for Cubic Corp. He manages day-to-day operations for the company’s finance department and is liaison between Cubic and the banking and financial communities. He formerly was a financial analyst for SDG&E.

    Bradley Feldmann, v.p. of programs for Cubic Defense Systems and a 10-year Cubic employee, was promoted to senior v.p. and CEO of Cubic Defense Systems. He is responsible for the firm's day-to-day operations.

    Bruce Gordon joined Grossmont Bank as v.p./commercial banking officer to work out of the Downtown office. Before joining Grossmont Bank, he was v.p./manager of the Downtown office of Home Savings.

    Luke Matteson was promoted to executive v.p. of Capital Bank of North County. He has more than 22 years of banking and lending experience and has been with Capital since 1990.

    Leonard Antick was appointed senior business specialist for the San Diego Manufacturing Extension Center. A senior business specialist, Antick has 25 years of experience in manufacturing and operations management. He formerly was with OptoElectronics/Textron Systems Corp.

    Washington Mutual Bank hired Mark Crowley as first v.p., regional manager in San Diego. Crowley held a similar position at Home Savings of America, which Washington Mutual acquired late last year. Before that he was with HomeFed Bank for 12 years.

    Scott Erreca, president of Erreca's, was installed as president of the San Diego chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America at the organization's annual installation banquet.

    Elected president of the Grossmont Healthcare District Board was Richard Bea, a retired registered nurse who was employed at Grossmont Hospital for 18 years. Serving with him are Gloria Chadwick, v.p.; Dennis Wilcox, secretary; Robert Yarris, treasurer; and Jim Steiringer, member at large.

    Nancy Birdwell was named v.p. for development at United States International University. She joins USIU from the University of Texas, Austin, where she was director of development for corporate and foundation relations.

    Phil Wise joined the Golden Triangle office of Colliers International as v.p. He formerly was affiliated with John Burnham & Co. for 11 years. Kirk Allison was promoted to associate v.p. of the Carlsbad office of Colliers, a full-service commercial real estate company. With Colliers for six years, Allison has earned the "Top-Five Producer" and "Manager" awards.

    Di Zinno Thompson Integrated Marketing Services added Lynda DiLorenzo as executive director of media, and Darlene DeJohnette, media supervisor. DiLorenzo was with KUSI-TV previously, and DeJohnette, with 15 years of experience in her field, was most recently an account executive with KJLH-FM radio in Los Angeles.

    The Sutherland Group, a provider of outsourced technology and customer management services, appointed Sherri Crispin as national account director for its analytical services division.

    Appointed associate v.p. of Retail Properties Group Inc. was Michael Epstein. Previously he served four years as associate broker with Flocke & Avoyer. He will focus on shopping center leasing and sales and tenant representation.

    Steve Visconti joined Nuera Communications Inc., developer of IP telephony gateways and voice over frame relay devices,as v.p. of sales. He formerly served as director of sales at Ascend Communications in Alameda.

    Lavine, Lofgren, Morris & Engelberg hired Mark Adler as a tax professional. Adler will work with the firm's high technology clients.

    Gary S. Luoto joined Scripps Bank's La Jolla office as senior v.p. and regional administrator. Former financial advisor at Dean Witter Reynolds, Luoto has more than 16 years in commercial banking. Scripps promoted assistant v.p. and manager, network services Chris Herring to v.p. and senior marketing assistant and Vicki Gee to marketing officer. Herring has been with the company since 1997 and Gee since 1993. )

    Paradise Valley Hospital announced Tim Patten is v.p. of business development and marketing. He has over 15 years of experience with hospital marketing and operations, including Simi Valley Hospital & Health Care.

    Cybele Thompson joined the Real Estate Asset Services Group of John Burnham & Company * ONCOR International to serve as on-site building manager for the La Jolla Executive Tower in the University Towne Centre area. She formerly was with Mitsui Kensetsu Development.

    Robin Scherer was promoted to director of marketing at Grice, Lund & Tarkington accounting firm. She has been with the company for three and one-half years.

    Dr. William Huse was named CEO and Janine Taylor named president and COO of Ixsys Inc. Both succeed Costa Sevstopoulos, who continues as chairman of the board. Another promotion makes Jeffrey Watkins v.p., research. Huse founded Ixsys in 1989 and will continue as chief scientific. Taylor and Watkins both joined the biopharmaceutical company in 1993.

    Mark Christian was promoted to first v.p. of operations and administration at Rancho Santa Fe National Bank in Escondido, where he spent the last two of his 12 years in banking.

    Jeff Hickox of Pinnacle Realty Management was named Certified Property Manager of the Year by the San Diego chapter of the Institute of Real Estate Management. Diana Valin of Fairfield Properties was named Candidate of the Year at the same chapter event.

    Serving as president of the Grossmont College is Ted Martinez Jr., Ph.D. He will leave his post as president of Richard J. Daley College in Chicago to begin here Feb. 15. He has 25 years of experience in community colleges.

    New at Grice, Lind & Tarkington CPAs are Patti Barna, administrative assistant who worked for 10 years at Palomar College as an office/tutorial assistant; and Patti Bee, bookkeeping, with nine years experience as an accounting manager.

    Thor Eakes, CPA and tax partner in the accounting firm of Murrill, Eakes & Co., was named board president of the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation. He has been with the organization since 1985 and was active in raising funds to build the Polinsky Children's Center for abused and abandoned children. Robert Butterfield, a San Diego attorney, was elected to rejoin the board as v.p.

    McGladrey & Pullen promoted Melinda Coil, CPA, to audit supervisor. She has been with the firm more than six years.

    Peregrine Systems has named Thomas Watrous as the eighth member of its board. Padres' owner John Moores is the company’s chairman; Steve Gardner its president. Watrous spent 33 years with Andersen Consulting, where since 1996 he was managing partner/office of the CEO.

    Fred Sainz was named v.p. of communications for the San Diego Convention Center. He recently worked as deputy campaign manager for the successful Prop C campaign. Before that he was deputy chief of staff to Mayor Susan Golding.

    The San Diego division of Nelson Communications Group promoted Johnnie Perkins to v.p. as part of an expansion in public affairs services. Before joining the group, Perkins was with another communications firm and served as chief of staff to San Diego City Councilman Byron Wear.

    John Lormon, a partner with the law firm of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch and leader of the firm's environmental law team, was appointed to the board of the Southern California Wetlands Clearinghouse.

   The national law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps elected Margaret Mann to its four-person executive committee for a two-year term. Darryl Steinhouse was re-elected to a one-year term; Robert Buell continues as managing partner; and Robert A. Levy remains on the committee for another year.

    Sue Carter was promoted to development director of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA. In this position she oversees grant writing, community relations and special events, as well as media relations and publicity. She has been with the Y since 1996, previously serving as military program director.


Mann

    James Durbin Jr. was named president of Foundation College. He also will head the Pleasant Hill campus of Foundation College.

    Three promoted by San Diego Processing Corp. are Rick Knode, v.p./g.m. of operations and telecom services, former manager of utility operations who has been with the organization for 17 years; Mary Vlassis, v.p./g.m. of utilities/facilities management, formerly v.p./g.m. of Internet services with 25 years of experience in her field; and Thomas Miller, senior v.p. of corporate strategies, formerly v.p./g.m. of utilities/facilities, with 12 years with the corporation. The nonprofit, public benefit corporation was established in 1979 by the city of San Diego.

    Arthur S. Moreau III was named a shareholder in Klinedinst, Fliehman & McKillop, a firm that specializes in civil litigation with an emphasis on trial work in California. He has been with the firm for three years and will continue to practice banking, real property and construction law.

    Karen Slaton was appointed advertising account coordinator/office manager for AH! Marketing Driven Advertising, a subsidiary of Jeff Anderson Consulting Inc. Slaton has experience in the industry through work at KUSI and CBS News.

    The National Dispatch Center Inc. promoted Ramona Tischer to national accounts representative. She formerly served as a field sales trainer. She has been with the firm since 1992.

    Daycom Systems, a telecommunications company and Lucent business partner, named Thomas Freeman as v.p. of sales and marketing. With 16 years of experience, Freeman most recently was v.p. of operations at Optimal Integrated Solutions.

    The commercial division of the San Diego-based Arrowhead Group of Cos. named Robert Young as commercial accounts manager. Formerly he was an underwriter in Arrowhead's commercial division. The Specialty Products Division of the group promoted Sam Teeple to senior v.p.

    Co-Mack Technology Inc. hired Craig Logan as CFO in an expansion of its financial and accounting operations. With more than 20 years of experience in the field, Logan formerly was U.S. corporate controller/CFO for Wavetek Corp.

    The Gable Group named Rick Cook as new account supervisor of its public relations division, and Michelle Tranchina as an account executive. Cook was a v.p. and public relations manager of PNC Bank before moving to San Diego. Tranchina was director of marketing for a privately owned restaurant company before joining the Gable Group.

    Judy McDonald. an active community volunteer, was named president of the San Diego Performing Arts League, making her the fourth president in the group's 15-year history. Other officers are Osborn Hurston of Highmark Capital Management, vice president; Roxana Foxx of Hunter International, secretary; Bradley Blose of San Diego Hebrew Homes, treasurer; and trustees, Lynette Allen, Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center; Mitch Gershenfeld, East County Performing Arts Center; Mike Grisdale, MKE International; and Sue Schaffner, North Coast Repertory Theatre.

    The San Diego office of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison hired five new attorneys. They are Jonathan Andrews, labor and employment; Carey Fox, business and technology; Michele Lara, business and technology; Brian Martin, litigation; and Kathleen Walker, intellectual property.


Carr

    Michael Vega joined the San Diego architectural office of David Evans and Associates Inc. as a project planner. Vega is an architect in both the United States and Mexico with extensive knowledge of Mexican design and construction.

    Richard Carr Jr., who joined the corporate offices of TEC Worldwide Inc. early in 1998 as v.p. of chair development was promoted to CEO of the education and development organization for CEOs. He has been with TEC since 1992 as a chair facilitating three peer advisory groups in Orange County, and was a TEC member from 1977 to 1986.

    Dover Pacific Computing added two vice presidents. Robert harrington, v.p. of marketing, was formerly with Oracle Corp., and Pete Gagnet was with ConsenSys Software.


Novak

    Heller Erhman White & McAuliffe added Randall K. Broberg, formerly of Baker & McKenzie, and David E. Kleinfield, from Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, as corporate and litigation shareholders in the San Diego office.

    Dan Novak was named director of programming and communications of Cox Communications. In this newly created position, he will continue to be responsible for Channel 4 San Diego, News Channel 15 and development of local programming. He has been manager of Channel 4 since 1997. Mary Ball joined Cox as director of community and government relations. Ball has been serving as government and community relations manager since 1996.


Ball

    Donna Armistead joined Roel Construction Co. as database administrator. She previously worked for Associated General Contractors. Joining Roel's Tenant Improvement Group as superintendent is Ian Botha, formerly of Turner Smith Company.

    Dr. Giovanni Ambrosino was appointed to the Xenogenics Scientific Advisory Board. He is professor of surgery and director of the Bioartificial Liver Program in the First Surgical Department and Liver Transplantation Unit at the University of Padova, Italy. Exogenics Corp. is the developer of synthetic bio-liver technology and is a subsidiary of Exten Industries Inc.

    Dr. Stan Pappelbaum, currently Scripps Health COO, will become CEO in July when current President and CEO Ames Early retires. So the transition is smooth, the two already began to oversee Scripps Health operations through the newly formed Office of the Chief Executive. Pappelbaum joined Scripps in 1996 after teaching and practicing pediatric cardiology at UCSD and Children's Hospital, and serving as managing partner of Professional Health Consulting Group based in Del Mar. Early began with Scripps in 1976 as president of Scripps Memorial Hospital

    Kyocera America Inc. promoted Robert Lanzone to general manager of flip chip packaging. He formerly was strategic technology advancement manager. Newly hired by Kyocera was Andy Piloto as senior technical staff engineer of research and development. He moved to the company from a position as an engineer at Northrop Grumman in Linthicum, Md., for 16 years.

    Alison Pivonka was promoted to partner at the law firm of Solomon Ward Seidenwurm & Smith, where she has practiced general business litigation since 1991. Joining the firm was Robert La Scala, who has 30 years of experience in commercial real estate law and was formerly a partner with the law firm of Graham and James.

    The city of Chula Vista named James Sandoval assistant director of planning. He has been director of planning and community development for the city of Del Mar since 1987. He fills a spot left vacant since the unexpected death in July of Ken Lee, who had a 30-year career with the Chula Vista Planning Dept.

    Tom Paulson, a North County supervisor for New Way Professional Landscape Services, a certified arborist with 25 years of experience and education in commercial landscape maintenance, was promoted to manager of the tree care division.

    Amy Runge joined the health care practice of public accounting firm Calderon, Jaham & Osborn. Frank Delker was promoted to information technology supervisor.

    Carole Leffer opened CML Consulting, which caters to small and mid-sized companies in the areas of human resource management, facilities, marketing, technology and financial management. She formerly was the administrator at the 23-attorney firm of Daley & Heft.

    Dover Pacific Computing named Jeff Gilford as v.p. of finance and administration. Before joining Dover, Gilford was CFO for RCG Management.

    Revel Productions Inc. added Betsy McHenry as director of sales. She has more than 10 years in destination management and event planning.


Gilford

    Terry Ghio, director of environmental, health and safety at Lignad Pharmaceuticals, was elected president of the San Diego Industrial Environmental Association. She is the first representative of the biotechnology industry to hold the position. Other new officers are Craig Anderson, Solar Turbines, v.p.; Wendy Longley-Cook, B.F. Goodrich Aerospace, secretary; and Tom Macias, Callaway Golf, treasurer.
