Elegant and stately, Fallbrook's Pala Mesa Resort has a classic feel, not tricked up or overdone. Although not overly long, it is long enough — 6,500 yards from the blues — and on a number of holes, extremely tight. Keeping the ball in the fairway is imperative at Pala Mesa. Hundreds of mature oaks, sycamores and pines are ready to swallow your errant shot. Greens are quick and undulating, but roll smooth and true. There are not many straight putts, so stay below the hole if at all possible. The fairways are lush and manicured, which is a nice reward for a well struck shot.
Designed in 1964 by Dick Rossen, this par 72 resort course has been around awhile, and the design has matured nicely. The slope rating of 131 from the blues and 125 from the whites indicates that Pala Mesa is a substantial challenge. Shots must be well-placed and thought out in advance. "Grip it and rip it" golf likely will result in repeated visits into the trees and a score approaching three figures. There is a reasonable landing area on most fairways, but wayward drives are treated harshly. Bunkers are used strategically, protecting most greens and dictating a precise approach. But there is a silver lining for those who end up trap-bound. The quality and consistency of the sand is among the best in the county. After 35 years, Pala Mesa Resort still has teeth, but enough charm so you don’t mind the bite.
Located in Fallbrook's avocado country, it’s just west of Interstate 15 on Old Highway 395. Rates vary from $40 to $70, depending on the day of the week.
