    James Ryan will succeed retiring C.W. (Bill) Burke as executive v.p. of the San Diego chapter of the Associated General Contractors. Ryan will continue to consult for the Taylor Ball firm, where he is an executive v.p., until Jan. 1, when he starts in his new role. Before joining taylor Ball in 1994, Ryan spent 16 years in construction industry association management with Master Builders of Iowa, where he became general manager.

    Faye H. Russell was named managing partner of the San Diego office of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison to replace Todd J. Anson, who has taken a job in another part of the country. Russell co-chairs the firm's Public Company Practice Group. Seven new attorneys added to the firm are: Timothy A. DeLange, environmental litigation practice; Jeremy B. Hayden, Sherry E. Schnell, Alan S. Kholos and Matthew B. Swartz, business and technology group; Sean T. Prosser, securities litigation group; and Scott G. Sand, real estate transactions.

    Samuel B. Williams was hired by Intracorp San Diego to launch the developer's new commercial division. Williams is the former president of the Lomas Santa Fe Group and senior v.p. for CB Commercial Real Estate Group.

    William R. Sharp was appointed executive v.p., and Brian H. Cahill was named v.p. of Douglas E. Barnhart Inc., a general contracting engineering and construction management firm. Sharp has been with the company since 1983, Cahill for seven years.

    Hellen Ehrman White & McAuliffe selected Joan Irion as a managing partner in the firm's San Diego office. Irion, who joined the firm in 1988, is a frequent speaker and is the former editor-in-chief of the Journal of California Taxation.

    Elizabeth Cate was promoted to project coordinator by Intracorp San Diego. She joined the development company in 1998 as a project analyst. The firm hired Alexander Beaton as a financial analyst. Previously Beaton worked for Newland Communities.

    Gateway appointed James Pollard senior v.p., chief information officer. Pollard has more than 20 years of IT experience, including his position at Gateway as v.p. of global applications.

    San Diego County Superior Court recruited Harold Kosakoff to be chief financial officer and Marlyn James to be evaluations officer. Kosakoff has been assistant director in the county Department of Public Works since 1997. James has been a consultant on strategic planning for government agencies since 1987.

    Qualcomm appointed David J. McDowell as senior v.p. of worldwide sales and marketing for consumer products. McDowell has more than 10 years of senior telecommunications management and more than 20 years of high-tech sales and marketing management. McDowell joined Qualcomm in 1996 as v.p. of sales for the company’s consumer products division. In August 1997 he was promoted to senior v.p. Qualcomm also appointed Anil T. Kripalani as senior v.p. of standards planning and international administration. He joined the company in 1994 as v.p. of strategic business development for Qualcomm's CDMA Division.

    David M. Rivkin was named a partner in the personal financial planning practice of accounting firm KPMG. He has been with the firm since 1985.

    David De Pinto, a former partner with Ketchum and director of its Los Angeles and Sacramento offices, was named president and CEO of Stoorza, Ziegaus & Metzger Inc. De Pinto will maintain his Los Angeles office and will spend time in each of the firm's five offices.

    Robert Young, former commercial accounts manager for Arrowhead Group, was promoted to assistant v.p. of the company’s commercial division, and Ron Barnett was promoted to senior v.p. of marketing. Barnett has been in the insurance business for 30 years. Also promoted was Michael McNitt to v.p., specialty products. He has been with that division since its inception five years ago.

    Kevin Konczal was named executive director of the San Diego County Republican Party. He was CEO/founder of Pro-Star Systems of Oceanside, a relocation management company for professional athletes.

    Motivational Systems Inc. promoted Tanya Simpson to v.p. of marketing. A 1999 recipient of the YWCA's TWIN award, Simpson previously was the company’s marketing director.

    Ashley Wood was appointed a senior account executive in the public relations division of the Gable Group. Formerly Wood worked with Edelman Public Relations in San Francisco.

    Dave Lynn, director of business development for Stellcom's Internet Solutions Division, was named to the Microsoft Certified Solution Provider Commerce Partner Advisory Council, a group of 25 organizations that work closely with Microsoft.

    Newly appointed director of sales and marketing for the Cohn Restaurant Group is Maureen Flanagan.

    The University of San Diego board has been joined by two new trustees: Margot A. Kyd, chief administrative officer and senior v.p. for Sempra Energy, and Sister Kathleen Hughes, provincial for the Society of the Sacred Heart in the United States. Before Sempra was formed in 1998, Kyd was v.p. of human resources and marketing and customer service for Enova Corp., and its principal subsidiary, San Diego Gas & Electric. Hughes replaces Sister Barbara Dawson on the board.

    Martin Alex Davis was named executive director of Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, a non-profit organization providing free surgical procedures to young people suffering from physical deformities. Davis spent the past five years as managing v.p. of Pacific ENT Medical Group.

    Henry DeVries, president of Henry DeVries Communications, was named chairman of the Greater San Diego Chamber Member Benefit Committee. Before opening his own p.r. firm in 1998, he was the president of Roni Hicks & Associates. He chaired the Super Bowl XXXII Ambassador Team.

    The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. promoted Camille E. Lutes to communications manager. She joined the company in 1997 as an executive assistant to EDC president and CEO Julie Meier Wright.

    Peninsula Athletic Club in Point Loma named Erin Cotter membership director and senior membership adviser. Cotter previously was director of new business development for Swingster Inc. The club also named Connie Shinkle to its advisory board. A charter member of the club, Shinkle is a former Outreach Project coordinator at USD.

    The Greater San Diego Business Association appointed Michael Lamb, of Lamb & Associates, to the board of directors for the gay and lesbian chamber of commerce. Lamb is a former board member and past president of GSDBA.

    Mail Boxes Etc. announced a handful of changes to its senior management team. Promoted were: Raymond Causey, v.p. of technology and chief information officer; Jay F. Scalise, v.p. of retail center development; Heather Rose, v.p. of people services and learning; Craig Stewart, v.p. of strategic initiatives; and Cheryl Hradecky, of "We Deliver Dreams" MBE Foundation for Children's Initiatives. Three v.p.'s —Mimi Zeller, Don Higginson and Mahasty Seradj —were promoted to senior v.p. positions.

    Jonathan Schneeweiss has joined the law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps as an associate in the firm's Environmental Practice Group. Most recently, he was a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG) in the U.S. Navy, and prior to that, a staff attorney in the U.S. Senate.

    Mike Reilly was appointed director of education at The Advertising Arts College. Also hired was Larry Smith, supervisor of professional education and a placement officer.

    Ashley Wood was appointed a senior account executive in the public relations division of the Gable Group. Formerly Wood worked with Edelman Public Relations in San Francisco.

    Foodmaker Inc., operator and franchiser of Jack in the Box restaurants, named Paul Schultz as senior v.p., operations and franchising. Schultz joined Foodmaker in 1973 as an hourly restaurant employee when he was a college student. He moved through company ranks, most recently working as assistant v.p. of operations and franchising. Foodmaker also appointed Richard Godett director of loss prevention. He will be responsible for all aspects of safety and security for the company’s 1,100 Jack in the Box units. Previously, Godett was a loss prevention manager for Tricon Global Restaurants.

    Ninteman Construction Co. promoted Steven Dunlap, who joined the firm in 1996, to assistant chief estimator, and added Rick La Ferney as an estimator and project manager in its military division. La Ferney formerly worked for Biostruct, a construction firm that is Ninteman's joint venture partner for biomedical and research laboratory facilities. Martin Breen has joined Ninteman as a senior project manager. Breen has more than two decades of industry experience, most recently as owner of Breen Construction Co. in Park City, Utah.

    Nina Hazard, president of Del Mar's Adventures in Advertising/Hazard Promotions was elected president of the San Diego Direct Marketing Association. She replaces Karen Marchetti of Strategic Marketing, who will be v.p. of programs. Other officers are Joseph Rego, secretary; Joe Gagliardi, treasurer; Anita Charney, v.p., membership; and Ann Scott, v.p., communications.

    Roel Construction promoted Dan Darly to group manager. His 16 years of experience includes working for Roel since 1995. The company hired Janine Bemis, a former sales administrator at Cush Honda, as facilities coordinator, and Rachel Huffman, formerly of Koll Construction, as project engineer. Also hired were Robert Gonzales, consulting roofing expert, who has spent more than 35 years in roofing, and Sandra Johnson, as a billing clerk. Johnson previously worked for L. R. Hubbard Construction Co.

    Jason Bott was named coordinating producer of Channel 4 San Diego, filling a position vacated by Nick Davis, who was promoted to coordinating producer of Padres Baseball.

    Catharine Hughes was appointed director of interior design for Smith Consult-ing Architects. Hughes has more than 15 years of experience in the industry.

    Joining Pardee Homes as project manager is Beth Fischer, formerly a Wells Fargo v.p. responsible for asset management.

    The San Diego Software & Internet Council, formerly known as the San Diego Software Industry Council, which now serves more than 400 member companies, appointed Richard Custard as executive director and COO. Custard has 25 years of leadership in the software industry, most recently with the Colorado Software Association. While there he moved the organization to a Web-based business model for all communications, and he and is laying the groundwork to repeat it here.

    Jostens Learning Corp. appointed Mary Wallace as executive v.p. Wallace started in the educational technology field 17 years ago, and rose through the ranks at Computer Curriculum Corp.

    Tanya Knebel has joined UCSD Extension's department of liberal arts and international programs as coordinator of the extension's year-round Spanish and French language immersion programs.

    The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. appointed Lauree M. Sahba v.p. of development. Sahba was formerly the executive director of the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce.

    Errick Myers was promoted from project manager, which he has been since 1989, to the newly created slot of v.p. of estimating at C.E. Wylie Construction Co.

    Dale Smith, a 28-year veteran in the banking industry, was hired by the Bank of Coronado as an assistant v.p. and loan officer.

    Davis Casey Jr. was elected treasurer of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He is a senior partner in the firm of Casey, Gerry, Reed & Schenk representing injured consumers.

    The San Diego Natural History Museum named the following new employees: Ron Shelley, deputy director of public programs; Elizabeth Castillo, director of corporate and foundation relations; Rhona Gorder, director of major gifts; James Hadden, director of membership; and Delle Willett, director of marketing.

    Dick Semerdjian, a civil trial lawyer and founding partner of Kennerson, Schwartz, Semerdjian & Haile, was appointed to the American Bar Association House of Delegates, a 10-member policy-making body of the ABA.

    Six new members of the San Diego Symphony board, bringing the total to 25, are James L. Bowers, formerly executive v.p. of Scripps Memorial Hospitals and president of the Scripps Foundation; Ben G. Clay, a partner at Carpi & Clay government relations firm; Lael Kovtun, community arts supporter; Robert S. Lawrence, president of RS Lawrence Development Inc.; John R. Queen, first v.p. and district director of the Rancho California District of Merrill Lynch; and Neal E. Schmale, executive v.p. and CFO of Sempra Energy.

    Linda Wergeland was named sales v.p. at McMillin Homes, where she takes over for Chuck Smith, retiring after more than 20 years with McMillin. Wergeland will oversee sales at six of McMillin's 13 new-home neighborhoods.

    Paul Chevalier and John Pedroarena, agents in the San Diego office, have been designated certified corporate services specialists by Coldwell Banker Commercial.

    The Transportation Network group of companies appointed Susan Watson as CEO and g.m. to replace Donald Hall, who resigned. The Network group includes Yellow Cab of San Diego, La Jolla and Crown City cab companies, Oceanside Yellow Cab and the Premier and La Jolla limousine services. Watson, a San Diego native, was previously director of finance at parent company Western States Investment Corp.

    Attorney Tom Stieber joined IP Equity Inc., a San Diego-based Internet venture capital and business consulting firm, as v.p., securities law. Stieber is experienced in corporate and securities matters.

    Cordero & Davenport Advertising appointed Jasmine Rios as account coordinator. She was the marketing assistant at Charlotte Russe Corporate Headquarters in San Diego. Before that she was an advertising assistant for Metro Newspapers in San Jose.

    Among the newly appointed board of directors for the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California is secretary Troy S. Stork, from Exclusively Legal in San Diego.

    Jane Benedict, a 15-year veteran in the commercial insurance industry, joined John Burnham & Company Insurance Services as a marketing executive. The company promoted Paul Heidemann to associate v.p. An insurance and risk management specialist, Heidemann joined the firm in 1995.

    Chicago Title Western Division hired Sue Frank as a sales and marketing rep for the company’s Ranch and Coast Escrow Branch. Frank, who has worked as an account representative for several mortgage companies in Southern California, will be an ambassador to Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Scripps Ranch and Rancho Penasquitos areas.

    Police officer Ernie Servin received a commendation from the Central Balboa Park Association, for his two years as storefront officer helping to keep the park safe.

    San Diego Opera named L. Renee Comeau, Tom Di Zinno and Dennis McConnell co-chairs of the Opera's Corporate Council. Comeau is senior v.p. of California Bank of Trust; Di Zinno is president of Di Zinno Thompson Integrated Marketing Solutions; and McConnell is a private investor.

    James Stanton Murphy joined Peninsula Bank as senior credit officer. Previously he was with the Bank of Coronado for eight years.

    Michael Steiner is the new information technology program director at the Vista campus of Maric College. Steiner was systems administrator at Paradigm Inc. and a junior network administrator at M.I.S. Communications in Denver.
