Five San Diegans were elected to the board of the Neurosciences Research Foundation Inc., the parent corporation of The Neurosciences Institute, a La Jolla-based, privately funded, not-for-profit brain research center directed by Nobel laureate Dr. Gerald M. Edelman. They are Esther J. Burnham, life director and past president of the San Diego Opera Association; H. Michael Collins, managing director of Van Kasper Advisers; Peter K. Ellsworth, president of the Legler Benbough Foundation; Bryce W. Rhodes, vice president of Whittier Energy Co.; and William R. Stensrud, general partner of the La Jolla-based venture capital firm Enterprise Partners.
Jack McGrory, former San Diego City manager for seven years, and now Padres' executive v.p./COO, was named president of Downtown Development Inc., the newly created company that will manage the Padres' real estate obligations in the East Village neighborhood. In addition, McGrory will resume working with Sol Price, for whom he was president of Price Enterprises from September of 1997 to November of 1999. He will relinquish his current Padres' position in August and will become a Padres' director. Peter W. Ito was named a partner in the San Diego office of Baker & McKenzie. He is in the creditor's rights, bankruptcy and insolvency practice group. He founded and was the first president of the San Diego Chapter of the California Receivers Forum.
Community First National Bank, formerly Valle de Oro Bank, appointed Christine A. Burgess manager for Invest, the bank's broker-dealer department specializing in personal, financial and business planning. She was with Invest in Minnesota for nine years before transferring to the El Cajon office. Aaron Katz was elected president of the San Diego County Bar Association. He has been a bar member for 13 years and is a civil litigation attorney and shareholder with Chapin, Shea, McNitt and Carter. As president he will head the 16-member board. He will be installed Dec. 1 with other board officers Chris Todd, treasurer, and Anita Margolis, secretary. Burnham Real Estate Services appointed Mark Cuffel director of multi-family services, a newly formed division within the firm's asset services group. Cuffel has more than 15 years of experience. Most recently he was district property manager with Legacy Partners where he was responsible for 3,500 Southern California units. Construction industry veteran Larry Steverson was promoted to operations manager for the San Diego Commercial Division of Nielsen Dillingham Builders. Steverson's career spans 25 years. He joined Neilsen Dillingham in 1997 after 20 years with Dillingham companies including Watkins Engineers and Constructors and Hawaiian Dredging. Roel Construction Co. hired the following: Pete Sara, preconstruction manager for the automotive group, formerly with K.L. Wessel Construction; Brian Golden, project engineer; Frank de Ruyter, field equipment operator who formerly worked for Price Electric; Sonya Garcia, administrative assistant, formerly with Western Insulation; Fred Nolta, group manger/senior project manager, formerly with Nielsen Dillingham Builders; and Bill Kopperud, technical expert for lath and plaster, previously president of Crown Exteriors.
Chairman of Inetcam's newly created board is Andrew Viterbi, vice chairman of Qualcomm until his retirement earlier this year. Previously he was a co-founder and president of Linkabit Corp. Inetcam is a San Diego-based company specializing in streaming video technologies and systems. Newly hired by the Stichler Group Inc. were architects Marcus Thorne and Mark Mattson and engineer Stan Brody. Thorne has eight years and Mattson 13 in of health care design, including work on several San Diego County hospitals. Brody has 37 years of experience in his field. California Bank & Trust appointed Frank Lee executive v.p. and chief information officer. Lee spent 14 years with Union Bank of California where he was the group administrative manager and general manager of Central Bank Services. Lisa Margolin-Feher launched a new public relations firm, Margolin & Associates, in Del Mar. She was a former v.p. in Bank of America's corporate communications department. Jan Heying, founder of Heying & Associates, received the Larry Long Award from the California State Bar's Lawyer Referral and Information Service Committee. The award is given to an individual who has made significant contributions to the legal community. Heying, who has been on the bar's referral and information committee for 10 years, the past six as chair, is a public relations specialist with more than 25 years of experience. Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek, a business and trial practice law firm, added Catherine E. Larocca, Rhonda K. Crandall, Jack R. Leer, Jeffrey B. Harris, Russell F.A. Riviere, Scott A. Miles, Kevin J. Reisch, Scott A. Miller and Lance Gordon Isen as associates to the firm, and Adam M. Rubin as a staff attorney. Larocca joined the Bureau Insolvency and Creditors' Rights Group. Crandall is in estate planning and administration and tax groups; Leer joined the civil litigation group, as did Harris, Riviere and Miller is a member of the business litigation group; Reisch is with the land use and environmental law group, as is Isen. Rubin was formerly with the Federal Defenders of San Diego Inc. Former San Diego Padres executive v.p. Bill Adams was appointed executive director of the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. He has 45 years of experience in sales, marketing and management. Adams joined the Padres in 1988 as executive director of ticket sales and operations. Within six months, he was promoted to v.p. of business operations. In 1991 he was named executive v.p. of the ballclub, a position he filled until retired in January this year. Towne Center Toastmaster Victoria Hanyzewski was named Area 17 Member of the Year for her outstanding participation in the club's communication and leadership development programs. Officers are Joe Krebs, president; Chris deVaca, v.p. of education; Harry Williams, v.p. of membership; Cari Lynn Vinci, v.p. of public relations; Rose Straney, treasurer; Terry Hache, secretary; and Rachele Rickert, sergeant at arms. Rebecca Everett was named Area 26 governor. Corsi Chapman Warwick advertising and public relations firm hired Paul Kreutz as senior art director. He has seven years of experience, including a position with mathews/mark Advertising. Former v.p.s at Pardee Construction Co., Michael McGee and Hal Struck, replaced retiring officers David Landon and Vance Meyer. McGee is Pardee's new president and CEO, and Struck executive v.p. and COO. Active in real estate since 1980, McGee joined Pardee in 1988. from management in Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Co. Struck began a real estate career in 1972 and joined Pardee in 1977. Dottie Hart, with 30 years of banking experience, was promoted to v.p. and branch manager of Community First National Bank's main office in El Cajon. She joined the bank in 1994. Heather Snider, senior account executive of Nuvonix Interactive, was named to the board of the San Diego Chapter of the American Marketing Association. Cheryll Falconer joined Colliers International as administrative manager. She has been in commercial real estate for 25 years, most recently with Grubb & Ellis Co. Joining the board of Sharp HealthCare Foundation were John Todd, senior v.p. and CFO of Gateway Inc.; George Dunn, v.p. of U.S. sales for Qualcomm; and Fernando Duk, a 1995 heart transplant recipient at Sharp Memorial Hospital and owner of Art Glass International. Karen Scarborough was appointed chief of staff for the office of the mayor of San Diego. Kimberley Layton, who has been chief of staff and director of intergovernmental relations for five years, will fill a newly-created position as director of public affairs, corporate/community relations for the San Diego Chargers. Charla Giles was named San Diego Division v.p. of Albertson's food and drug stores and supermarkets. She replaces Donna L. Robbins who was promoted to senior v.p. of operations in Northern California. Giles began her Albertson's career in 1987 as a checker. Steve A. Escoboza is interim director of the County Health and Human Services Agency, replacing Dr. Robert Ross who accepted a post with the California Endowment. Escoboza was assistant director of health and assistant director of personnel for the county between 1985 and 1992 when he left the county. He returned in 1999 to oversee several high profile health programs. Lewis Michaelson joined the public affairs firm Katz & Associates as director. His 15 years of experience includes serving as senior community relations manager at Jason Associates. Technology and data systems veteran Marcus Lee is MassHysteria Inc.'s executive director of technologies. His 10 years of programming and six years of management included being assistant v.p. of production systems at National Decision Systems. Erich R. Lathers is the new president of BRG Consulting Inc., an environmental planning firm. He has been with the company for 10 years providing technical direction. The law firm of Casey, Gerry, Reed & Schenk has three new partners: Gayle Blatt, Robert Francavilla and Thomas Penfield. Blatt started as a clerk in the firm and became an associate. She specializes in class action litigation, personal injury and wrongful death. Francavilla also was an associate formerly and is a personal injury and wrongful death specialist. Penfield formerly was a fulltime clinical professor at University of San Diego School of Law. He specializes in environmental and general business tort litigation. Neville Willsmore was promoted to associate at KMA Architecture & Engineering. He joined the firm last year as a project manager. Previously he was director at Xennex Development Corp., Vancouver, Canada. Michael Yadrick was named a community association manager for the Walters Management Co., a property management firm. His seven years of experience includes serving as property manager for a 272-unit apartment community. Deborah Contreras, a 23-year veteran of the customer service industry, was named manager of the 2000 Street of Dreams luxury home show. The five-week event will showcase six fully-appointed multimillion dollar homes and will be the site of the 2000 American Society of Interior Designers Designer Showcase. PinnFund USA, a full service mortgage banker, appointed Gerard Sheehan Jr. as chief information officer. He has 18 years in the field. Nolte Associates Inc. named as v.p. Ronald C. Parker, who joined the San Diego office in 1985 and has been an associate since 1988. Newly hired by Nolte were Gary Decker, whose 25 years of experience were in jobs with private and public firms in San Diego, and Dan Black, a senior engineer with experience in environmental science and hazardous waste. New at Burkett & Wong Engineers is Brian Shipman, who has two years of experience working in subdivisions, septic design and surveying. New at Di Zinno Thompson Integrated Marketing Solutions are Rob Pettis, a copywriter who moved from Atlanta; Scott di Girolamo, designer; Dave LaSorte, affiliate marketing/business development manager; and Louisa Egido, account coordinator. Dariush G. Adli joined as associate the intellectual property and technology law firm of Fish & Richardson. He is in the litigation group. Steve Cade, La Jolla Club Golf Co.'s CEO, was named a Bertst & Young semifinalist Entrepreneur of the Year. Rapid growth of this private company in Vista resulted in hiring Chris Mathewson as national accounts manager. Venture Catalyst Inc. hired Danford Deakin as COO. Before joining the firm, Deakin was group director for Zentropy Partners/San Diego, a digital business integration company. New in v.p. positions with San Diego National Bank are Mikal Sabree, real estate construction lending, and John Terwilliger, commercial real estate, specializing in construction and permanent mortgage loans. Sabree was with Sumitomo Bank Ltd., and Terwilliger was with First National Bank in San Diego. Scott Hamlin joined Pountney & Associates Inc., a civil engineer and surveyor firm, as a student engineer, and Michael Nersesian was hired as an administrative assistant to project managers. Also added was Phillip Dodge as a CADD technician, and Rebecca Filson, an accountant with 11 years of experience. Hokanson Capital Management Inc., Solana Beach, appointed Mark Petrie, CFA, as portfolio manager and Steve Hollenbeck as director of marketing/business development. Cristina White joined Schmidt Scanlon Gordon, an architecture planning and design firm as job captain. White has more than 30 years of experience in the design and construction industries. Prior to joining Schmidt Scanlon Gordon, White designed and managed the development of nine dental clinics in the Los Angeles area over the past 10 years. Attorney Tom Stieber joined Internet Stock News as executive v.p. of securities law. With 400,000 subscribers, Internet Stock News at www.netstocks.com is one of the largest online financial publications. Four in San Diego County were awarded the Certified Community Association Manager designation by the California Association of Community Managers. They are Kathleen Gatward, Professional Community Management; Karen Martinez, S.H.E. Manages Propertird; David Lane Sontheimer, Ranch & Sea Management; and Joseph M. Valenti, North Coast Village Homeowners Association. Two new associates hired by Higgs, Fletcher & Mack are Heather Van Blarcom, health care practice group, and Siobhan Franklin, general civil litigation. Formerly Van Blarcom practiced medical malpractice defense with Chapin, Shea, McNitt & Carter. Franklin as with Daily & Heft in Solana Beach for five years. The law firm of Kimball, Tirey & St. John added Christopher A. Seaman and Craig McMahon to its business real estate group division. Seaman was with a firm in San Jose, and McMahon's specialty is mediation solutions. Stan Lawrence of Stan Lawrence Portrait Art Photography, was retained as a consultant by Express Digital of Denver, Colo. A digital photography expert, Lawrence will teach other photographers throughout the country how to utilize state of the art techniques. Newly hired by Johnson & Jennings General Contracting was Susan Chapman, project engineer. She has 18 years in the business, most recently as a senior project coordinator for McCullough-Ames Development Inc. in Rancho Bernardo. Paul Barnes was promoted to director of acquisition and community development at Shea Homes San Diego Inc. He joined the company in 1997 and has been in the building industry for 17 years. He formerly held the same position with the Corky McMillin Cos. Jack in the Box Inc. promoted Karen Trissel to a new position as divisional v.p. of product marketing and marketing research, and appointed John R. Watt as divisional v.p. of distribution. Before joining Jack in the Box in 1996, Trissel was a marketing manager at General Mills in Minneapolis. Watt is a 23-year Jack in the Box veteran. Richard Stouffer was hired as executive v.p., human resources, and Sherif Dessouky as a financial services client executive, by Alitum, formerly RCG Management. Stouffer was an associate partner with Andersen Consulting and has been in human resources for 19 years. New at Bilbro Construction Company is Donna King, project engineer for the company’s OnCall facility services department, which performs building maintenance and service. She formerly was with Hotel Installation and Design. Douglas E. Barnhart Inc. added Michael Derouin, senior project manager; Eric Jackson and Gregory McWhorter, superintendents. Derouin has been in construction for 25 years, McWhorter for 23 years. Jackson formerly worked for Healy Construction. Mira Costa College named Joe Moreau as dean of academic information services. He leaves West Hills College in Coalinga to accept the job. Mark W. Andrews is the new chairman of the American Lung Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties replacing Bente Hansen. He has been on the volunteer board since 1994 and is the principal of Andrews Capital Management. Others on the board are Rafael Santos, head of International Services at Children's Hospital, chair-elect; Carlee Harmonson, senior v.p. and manager of trust services at First National Bank, secretary; and Craig Nelson, v.p. and manager of the technology banking group at Comerica Bank, treasurer. Joining matthews/mark were Christi M. Dixon and Teresa McGrath, both assistant account executives. Dixon, in the public relations division, was previously with a group in St. Louis. McGrath, in the firm's advertising department, was with Roni Hicks & Associates. Malkin, president of her consulting firm, taught a course this summer in the Graduate School of Design at harvard titled "Innovative Design Strategies for Health Care: A Research-based Perspective." Southwest Bank promoted Mary A. Scotti to v.p. and manager of business development for the North Coastal operations. The first officer to join the bank before its opening in December 1997, she has more than 37 years in banking, 18 of them in the north coastal county. Southwest hired Dan Vuksanovic to head up its new East County branch in El Cajon. He has been in banking for 36 years, the past 16 with the former Valle de Oro Bank, which was acquired by Community First National Bank of Fargo, N.D. Jason Dane Maxwell and Timothy Brock McClellan joined the law firm of Neil Dymott, Perkins, Brown & Frank as associates. Both specialize in civil litigation. Zland.com of San Diego, Entrepreneur Magazine's Internet franchise, promoted Rochelle Manns to sales manager. She has 11 years of IT experience and previously worked for Elcom.com. Alexander X Inc., publisher of technology and bioscience directories, named Margaret Jackson as sales administrator. The position was added to accommodate the demand created by rapid growth in the industry. Jeffrey M. Levenson was appointed executive director of the San Diego Chamber Orchestra to replace resigning director Geoffrey Brooks. Previously Levenson was director of facility operations for the San Diego Symphony. Amy Romaker is the new president of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum, a nonprofit organization created to promote and support emerging technology companies. Immediate past president Mark J. Lee of California Bank & Trust is the new chair-elect, replacing Kenneth P. King of Signal Consulting. Romaker is client development manager for Pillsbury Madison & Sutro, a national law firm. Former president and new chair Lee has been involved with the Forum for more than seven years. Lee is v.p. and manager of the North County Corporate Banking Group for California Bank & Trust. Jeff Justus joined Schmidt Design Group Inc. as a senior landscape architect/project manager. Most recently he was with a San Jose firm, but previously had spent 10 years as a civilian staff architect for the Navy in San Diego. Praja, a San Diego-based technology provider, named Kathleen Van Sleen as CFO. Before joining Praja, she was senior v.p. of finance and administration at Diversa Corp. She has 15 years of financial experience in turnaround or start-up companies. Sandag elected Carlsbad Councilwoman Ramona Finnila as its board chair. Elected vice chair was National City Councilman Ron Morrison. Both are one-year terms. Harland "Swede" Svare, NFL all pro and head coach and general manager of the San Diego Chargers from 1971 to 1975, joined Symmetry Pain Relief Clinic as executive manager. He had been chairman and CEO of the Anatomical Alignment Institute at Peak Wellness Inc. in Greenwich, Conn. Gina Del Bene, who has five years of experience in the beauty industry, is C. Spa Salon's newest esthetician. John R. Hamman was appointed project scientist and Ralph Vasquez was promoted to senior regulatory compliance specialist for Environmental Business Solutions Inc. Previously Hamman served for 10 years as operations manager for BKK Corp., formerly Greenfield Environmental. Vasquez was hired by the company in 1998 and before that spent 13 years as an environmental analyst for SDG&E. Dale Royal was hired as a senior project manager, and Rebecca Reid as an accountant/financial analyst, by Centre City Development Corp. Royal was most recently with a nonprofit agency in Grand Rapids, Mich., and has 12 years of experience. Reid, from Maine, has relocated in San Diego for the job. Ross H. Hyslop was elected to the partnership of McKenna & Cuneo, which he joined in 1993 as an associate. Hyslop concentrates on complex commercial and business litigation. Michael A. Swit, formerly of the firm's Washington, D.C., office, relocated to San Diego. He is of counsel and a member of the firm's food and drug department. Elana Cooper joined Grice, Lund & Tarkington, CPAs, of Encinitas as an accountant. She formerly worked at a firm in Woodland Hills. The San Diego office of Best Best & Krieger added E. Sean Arther as an associate in its employment and labor group. and Melissa W. Woo as an associate representing both public and private clients. Arther's experience includes the representation of public agencies in sexual harassment, wrongful termination and discrimination lawsuits. James L. Fitzpatrick, CEO/publisher of San Diego Magazine since he purchased it in 1994, was named president of the City and Regional Magazine Association. The Workers Compensation Division (ArrowComp) of Arrowhead General Insurance Agency Inc. promoted Bill Trzos to assistant v.p. He was formerly workers compensation programs manager for ArrowComp. Jeffrey H. Silberman was named managing partner at Solomon Ward Seidenwurm & Smith. He has been with the firm since 1986 and has been a partner since 1989. He specializes in general business, corporate and employment law. Andrew "Andy" B. Campbell, assistant superintendent of planning and facilities at the Sweetwater Union High School District, was named Chula Vista Parks & Recreation director. He will oversee the city's existing 38 parks beginning this month when he leaves the high school district after a 32-year career. Gregory F. Szabo was elected chairman and CEO of Xenogenics Corp., a subsidiary of Exten Industries Inc. Elected to the board were Dr. Sangeeta Bhatia, assistant professor of bioengineering at UCSD, and Dr. T. Scott Brassfield of Colorado. The Downtown law firm of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch added Margaret Prodanov, Carol Young and Rex Edwards as associates. Prodanov's expertise is in corporate law, securities, business finance, venture capital and high tech. Young specializes in real estate and business transactions, and Edwards is a specialist in corporate transactions. Don Lyons of San Diego was promoted to senior v.p. of Geico's four insurance companies. He has been with the company since 1969 and has been a San Diego regional v.p. since 1996. Also promoted was Nancy Pierce to regional v.p. of Geico operations in San Diego. She joined the firm in 1986. Art Thompson was named executive director of the Center for Social Services (Lesbian and Gay Men's Community Center. Thompson served as interim director for 11 months. The Mooney & Associates Planning Team hired Carlos Jallo as an associate partner in conjunction with opening a new branch in Santa Barbara. Others new to the company are Jennifer Lynch, in a new position as director of marketing, and Theodore "Ted" Lee, associate environmental planner. Promoted was Michael L. Page to principal planner in the Environmental Studies Division. He has been with the firm for 20 years. Lynch was previously with San Diego Consulting Group Inc., and Lee was an environmental scientist at Burns & McDonnell. Newly elected to the board of the California Center for the Arts in Escondido were Marshall D. Banker and John A. Haynes. Board officers are James M. Haynes, president and CEO. Lane McVey was hired as v.p. and general counsel of National Steel and Shipbuilding Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. He joins the company from the law firm of McKenna & Cuneo. McVey's 25 years of experience include commercial and government contracting, negotiations, claims resolution and criminal and civil litigation. Gail Goldman, public art director for the city of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture for 10 years, leaves the job for a career as a fulltime consultant on public art planning and project development. During her tenure, 55 projects were completed and 44 others are in progress. Thomas V. Compton is the new CEO for SkinMedica, professional skin care products, headquartered in Carlsbad. He was with ICN Pharmaceuticals Inc. Brad Holiday will join Callaway Golf Co. this month as executive v.p. and CFO. Most recently he was v.p.of financial planning and analysis for Gateway Inc. Penguin eBusiness Solutions appointed Ben Philyaw as president. He formerly worked for Epic Cycle Interactive. He has been active in Internet start-ups for seven years. |
