Sequenom Inc. named Toni Schuh president, CEO and a member of the board. He replaces Hubert Koster, founder, who will leave his job with the company but will become v.p. of the board. Charles Cantor, the company’s chief scientific officer, also was elected to the board. Manchester Resorts' senior v.p. Peter Litrenta was elected chairman of the San Diego Port Tenants Association. The Association, founded in 1989, is a coalition of more than 200 Tidelands businesses and affiliates. The CEO of Cohu Inc., Charles A. Schwan, retired last month. Schwan served in various management positions at Cohu since 1971 and had been CEO since 1996. He will remain chairman of Cohu's board. James A. Donahue, president and COO, was promoted to president and CEO. Donahue joined Cohu's Delta Design subsidiary in 1978 and has been president of Delta Design since 1983 and president and COO of Cohu since October 1999. Yvonne B. Jackson joined Community First National Bank as first v.p./government guaranteed loans manager. She was recently named "Women in Business Advocate of the Year" by the Small Business Association. Sylvia Swenson was named v.p./compliance officer by the bank. She is a 25-year veteran of the banking industry. Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison named Richard L. Parker managing partner of the San Diego office to replace Faye H. Russell, who has moved to Brobeck's seven-member policy committee. Harvey P. White, chairman and CEO of Leap Wireless International, is the new chairman of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. He replaces Duane J. Roth, who held the position for five years. Additions to the EDC board are Scott McMillin, vice chairman of The Corky McMillin Cos.; Michael McNeely, CEO of the San Diego Chargers; Henry L. Nordhoff, president of Gen-Probe Inc; Gene W. Ray, chairman, CEO and president of The Titan Corp.; Rhonda F. Rhyne, president of CardioDynamics International; David Robino, vice chairman of Gateway; William A. Roper Jr., executive v.p. and CFO of SAIC; Bill Stensrud, general partner of Enterprise Partners Management; and Steven B. Engle, chairman and CEO of La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co. in the ex-officio seat reserved for the chairman of BIOCOM/san diego. Richard S. Podgorski was appointed v.p./director of development for Scripps Foundation for Medicine and Science. He was assistant vice chancellor for development and v.p. of UCSD from 1993 to 1998. He returns to San Diego for his new position after serving as v.p. for advancement at the State University of New York at New Paltz.
Robert "Buddy" Bohrer was promoted to director of land acquisition for Pardee Construction Co. He joined the company in 1997 as an asset manager after working in sales and leasing of industrial and research and development properties for Grubb and Ellis Technology Properties Group. Frea E. Sladek was appointed g.m. of the San Diego State University Foundation following a national search. She has been employed by the foundation since 1969 and is the fourth manager since the foundation was formed in 1943. She had served as associate g.m. until she was appointed interim g.m. Martin P. "Marty" Cassell was appointed president of USA Federal Credit Union, where he has been acting president since March 1999. Formerly a partner with the San Diego law firm of Hinchy, Witte, Wood, Anderson & Hodges, Cassell was hired as v.p. of administrative and legal services of USA Federal Credit Union. John Maguire was promoted to senior v.p. and named manager of the La Mesa branch of California Bank & Trust. He has been with the bank for nearly 12 years since he moved there from Bank of America.
Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch has added Frank Tobin, Bradley Roppé, Scott Omohundro and Timothy Fitzpatrick to the firm. Fitzpatrick, formerly with the La Jolla firm of Fisher Thurber, joins as Of Counsel. Associates Roppé and Omohundro specialize in civil and business litigation, and Tobin specializes in business litigation. The San Diego Baker & McKenzie law office has five new associates: William R. Reiter II, formerly with Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps, and Erik J. Gantzel, formerly with U.S. Customs and special assistant U.S. attorney, corporate and securities practice; Marisa Janine-Page, formerly with Milberg Weiss Bershad Hynes & Lerach, litigation; Peter R. Victor Goochey joined Ryland's San Diego division as v.p.-operations. He held the same position with Del Webb "Sun City" communities in Palm Desert and Hilton Head, S.C. Tom Weed of Collins General Contractors is retiring after 45 years of accounting as controller/v.p. Assuming his responsibilities is Jerry Leaming, who was with Ernst & Young for seven years. WebSideStory Inc. expanded its team of officers by naming John J. Hentrich, president and CEO; Terance A. Kinninger, CFO; Meyar Sheik, chief marketing officer; Randall K. Broberg, general counsel and chief privacy officer; Sheryl Roland, v.p., human resources; and Tom Stigler, v.p., enterprise sales and business development.
Paul A. Rose is a new associate with Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps in the firm's San Diego office. He moved from the Century City office of O'Melveny & Myers. The San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau promoted Christine Shimasaki to executive v.p. of sales and marketing; Kerri Verbeke Kapich to v.p. of marketing; and Kevin Kamenzind to v.p. of citywide convention sales. Shimasaki has been with the bureau since 1993, Kapich since 1997 and Kamenzind also since 1993. Marshall D. Banker and John D. Hull were elected to the board of the San Diego Symphony. Banker is president of Bae Systems, an Information Systems Sector, and Bae Systems Mission Solutions. Hull is the v.p. of external affairs for Pacific Bell in San Diego. Dr. Robert K. Ross, San Diego County's director of Health and Human Services, accepted a position effective in July as president and CEO of the California Endowment, the state's largest health foundation. John M. Eger, former telecommunications adviser to President Nixon and director of the White House Office of Telecommunications Policy, and now the Van Deerlin professor of communications and public policy at San Diego State University, was awarded the Minister's Award for Leadership. The honor was bestowed by the Hon. Eita Yashiro, minister of Posts and Telecommunications in Tokyo. Eger received the award for his role in establishing the Pacific Telecommunications Council, based in Hawaii, to bring together industry, government and academic leaders. Gary Goss joined Burnham Real Estate Services as a v.p. of capital markets group. Utilizing his 15 years of experience, Goss will work out of the Carlsbad office. Anderson Travel & Cruises appointed Tina Kane as manager of corporate services. She has more than 18 years of travel industry experience and was director of concierge and travel services for the Hotel Del Coronado. Sam King, special investigative unit director at Golden Eagle Insurance Corp., received the 1999 Liberty Mutual Chairman's Award, the highest honor bestowed on employees of the Liberty Mutual Group, of which Golden Eagle is a member. Only 14 of Liberty Mutual's 37,000 employees will receive the award this year. Noel Wilshusen joined Lamb Consulting Engineers as an electrical designer. He has 23 years of experience, most recently as electrical foreman for Gould Electric in Poway.
Daniel Johnson, president of San Diego-based Environmental Business Solutions Inc., was approved for membership on the Brownfields Committee of the California Redevelopment Association. Bailey/Gardiner Creative Communications Inc. hired Donovan Roche and Erika Link, Roche as a senior account executive and Link as an account coordinator. Also hired was Matt Scholl, a 10-year veteran of the investor relations field, as business development manager. Nexergy Inc. named Joseph A. Dougherty III as COO, making permanent the interim position he has been filling. Nexergy is the parent company of Promark Electronics, which Dougherty joined in 1992, and of Tauber Electronics in Escondido, which appointed William Parrilli as regional sales manager to focus on battery sales in the greater San Diego area. The Gable Group promoted Rick Cook to v.p. of public relations, and Brendi Rawlin to account coordinator. Harris Weisman joined PaineWebber Inc., as first v.p. and financial adviser. He was previously in a local office of another Wall Street broker. Ninteman Construction Co. hired Robert Falar and Amy Driscoll. Falar, a project engineer, formerly worked in the developments in the Los Angeles area. Entropia, a computer service company, named Andrew Chien as chief technology officer and Scott Kurowski as v.p. of business and development as the company relocates from Silicon Valley to San Diego County. David A. Sleet was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year from the College of Sciences at San Diego State University. A La Jolla resident who is retired from teaching at SDSU, he is associate director for science in the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, where he conducts research and manages a program of research and grants. E-commerce business medibuy.com Inc. appointed Michael Martin to the newly created position of COO. Prior to joining medibuy.com, Martin was an executive v.p. of Premier Inc., a strategic business alliance of not-for-profit hospital and healthcare systems. She was formerly a v.p. for Jazzercise. David Pierce is the new director of development for the La Jolla Chamber Music Society. For the past nine years he has been a fund-raiser for the Vista Hill Foundation. Robert Donegan Jr. joined The Arrowhead Group of Companies as v.p. and director of human resources. He formerly held the same position for Ward North America Inc. The Commercial Division of the Arrowhead Group recruited Gary Lough as v.p. Jon Busse was named director of construction for Senior Resource Group, a developer and operator of senior independent, assisted and convalescent living sites. He has more than 30 years of experience in real estate projects. Kevin Reubel joined C.E. Wylie Construction Co. as a project superintendent working at Camp Pendleton. He has 28 years of construction experience,12 of them as a superintendent. Melissa M. Fitgerald joined DermTech International as v.p. for business development. She was a scientist at Dura Pharmaceuticals. Sushi Performance & Visual Art appointed Matthew Adelman as technical director and Mark Morris as visual art coordinator. Universal Preservation Technologies Inc. named Gene F. Tutwiler as president, CEO and director.
