Clifford Ira Numark is the new president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Technology Alliance. Prior to joining SDRTA, he was COO of the Los Angeles Regional Technology Alliance. While at LARTA, he authored the first study on venture capital in Southern California and the first edition of the Federal Technology Funding Guide. He also created LARTA's entrepreneur seminar series, TechNet Ed. Prior to joining LARTA, he was a staff aide in Sacramento, a policy analyst in Washington, D.C., and a journalist in Arizona and Southern California. Numark replaces Joseph A. Raguso, who was appointed by Gov. Gray Davis as deputy secretary for strategic technology for the state Trade and Commerce Agency. Fahari Jeffers, general counsel of the United Domestic Workers Union, was elected chair of the San Diego Convention Center Corp. board. Other officers are Pat Shea, partner at the law firm of Pillsbury Madison & Sutro, vice chair; and Maria Nieto Senour, an SDSU professor, secretary-treasurer. Daniel V. McAllister was appointed to the board. Felicia Bell, a broker with Coronado Shores Co., was elected president of Friends of Downtown. Also on the board are Eve Hager, v.p.; Niki Moore, secretary; Jill Vivanco, treasurer; and Becky Flanagan, Chalea Pierce, Marcia Kitson, Sharon McCoy, Sandra Wine and Donna Blomquist, directors.
Joseph Winicki joined Scripps Bank as senior investment officer of the Trust and Financial services Division. Before going to Scripps, Winicki was a trust investment officer for more than 30 years. Sally B. Thornton of La Jolla is the honorary chair for the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge-sponsored Leavey Awards for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education. Thornton is former president of the San Diego chapter of Freedoms Foundation.
The new CEO at Ensemble Communications Inc., a supplier of broadband wireless access systems, is David Twyver. He is former CEO of Teledesic Corp. and was president of Nortel Wireless Networks. CPA Barry J. Kohn opened an office on Broadway in Downtown San Diego to provide the entire range of financial services. Six new business and technology attorneys hired by Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison are Jason M. Hannon, Kris L. Hanson, John S. Healy, Patrick L. Keran, Catherine C. Lee and Jessica Warner Ojen. All six will work in general representation, venture financing and public offerings. Mary Ball was promoted to v.p. of government and community relations, and Dan Novak to v.p. of programming and communications for Cox Communications. Novak is responsible for Channel 4 San Diego, News Channel 15, public relations and branding. He has been with the company since 1991. Ball joined Cox in 1996 and will oversee regulatory compliance, charitable outreach and community programs. Stath Karras was promoted to COO of Burnham Real Estate Services. He joined the firm in 1989. Prior to that he was v.p. and director of Wallace Associates Management Inc. in Salt Lake City. Four new partners at Hillyer & Irwin law firm are Robert P. Allenby, with the firm since 1992; Stephen M. Brigandi; Dirk Michaels who joined the firm in 1996, and Steven S. Owen. New associate attorneys are James B. MacRobbie, Chris S. Bouffard and Sandra T.M. Chang. VitaGen Inc. appointed Greg Dane as CEO to lead the company’s product, the Extracorporeal Liver Assist Device, through clinical trials. His more than 20 years of biomedical experience, include being president and CEO of Neocrin Co., a company developing treatment for diabetics. Barbara J. Gallagher was named v.p. of operations. She has been with the company since it began in 1998. Dave Hall was appointed permanent chief of the Harbor Police. He has been acting chief since last July. He is a 30-year veteran and former captain with the San Diego Police Department. Before joining the Port, Hall was bureau chief of the state Peace Officers Standards and Training Department in Sacramento. Carolyn Taylor was named a shareholder in the law firm of Neil, Dymott, Perkins, Brown & Frank. Her specialty is general civil litigation emphasizing defense of medical products, product liability and complex litigation. New associates at the firm are recent law school graduates Jennifer L. Kammerer and Courtney R. Miklusak. New director of information technology at National University is Robert Clay, who has been an aerospace industry administrator at General Dynamics and Computer Sciences Corp., and recently was assistant director of telecommunications at University of Southern California. San Diego lobbyist and businesswoman Nikki Clay is the first woman to chair the Downtown San Diego Partnership, a 320-member organization of Downtown business leaders. She is a partner in the government relations firm of Carpi & Clay and has more than 30 years of experience in both the private and public sectors. Robert Dawson joined Pardee Homes as g.m. of sales processing for the company’s 35 new homes communities. He has been in real estate sales for 15 years. He began with Pardee in 1985, left for positions with Weyerhaeuser and North American mortgage cos., and has now returned to Pardee. Neal Electric named Greg Loudermilk v.p. to head a newly established special projects division. Loudermilk has been with the firm since 1990. He was honored recently by David Begent & Co., a longtime Neal Electric client, as its 1999 subcontractor of the year. A new employee at Neal Electric is Frank Volpe, v.p./controller. Most recently he was CFO and controller for Southern California region of Interface, a $1.4 billion Fortune 500 manufacturer and distributor of flooring products. Frazee Paint added Sally Hayes to its new home construction sales team. She is area manager for San Diego County. Diane Willcox is newly appointed associate g.m. of San Diego Playgoers/A Nederlander Presentation. She has been associate marketing director of the Old Globe Theatre since 1996. Frank J. Kotarba was appointed president and CEO of Golden Eagle Insurance Corp. Most recently he was president of property and casualty for CalFarm Insurance Co. in Sacramento. Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich named the following as partners in the firm's San Diego office: Mark Wicker, Jeffrey T. Baglio, Scott M. Stanton, Susan Resley and Christopher M. Young. Wicker was formerly a partner in the Carmel Valley office of Pillsbury Madison & Sutro. Baglio and Stanton are in the firm's corporate and securities group; Resley and Young are in the litigation group. The Townsend Agency, an advertising and public relations firm, appointed Bernhard Schroeder chairman of a new strategic board. He steps down from his role as g.m., which he has held since summer of 1999, to take the position, which will utilize his 16 years of experience in global integrated Internet technology marketing. Joining Neighborhood National Bank as executive v.p./chief credit officer is Tom Ferrarra. He has been in banking for 35 years, most recently with Valle de Oro. Southwest Community Bank appointed Carol M. Beres to fill a board vacancy. She is a property and asset manager, founding chair of the C Street Group, a director of the Downtown Partnership and a director of Alpha Project.\Promotions and appointments at Cubic Corp. include Philip Dixon from director to senior director of strategic planning; Walt Bonneau from v.p. of engineering to president of engineering; and Richard Trenery, v.p. of business development. Dixon has been with Cubic since 1989 and as technical marketing manager led the company into electronic toll collection systems. Bonneau left a job with Sony to move to Cubic in 1997, Trenery was with MTA New York City Transit for more than 10 years. Deborah Jondall joined Di Zinno&Thompson Integrated Marketing Solutions as director of the agency's partnership marketing division. She was most recently associate director of development for San Diego Opera. Other appointments at DiZinno&Thompson are Rob Petrie, who has been with the agency for eight years, creative director; Jonathan Frost, who moved from New York to be an account executive; and Tori Evans, a junior copywriter who relocated from Atlanta. Henry C. "Hank" Cunningham was appointed director of Economic Development and Community Services for the city of San Diego. Cunningham has 22 years of experience with Orange County and cities of Long Beach, Whittier and Santa Ana. Most recently he was economic development and redevelopment manager for MBIA MuniServices Co., a consulting service for 30 California cities. Shea Homes promoted Renee Hill to escrow manager. She has more than a decade of experience, the past five with Shea as a sales associate and then escrow coordinator. John DeMoss is the new CFO for San Diego-based International Licensing Co., which includes Hang Ten, Lightning Bolt, Gouge, Pipeline and Cinderella brands. Most recently, DeMoss was with Sungard Shareholder Systems based in San Mateo. Charlene D. Bates, a 12-year mortgage banking veteran was named manager of the San Diego branch of Ryland Mortgage Co., headquartered at Carmel Mountain Ranch. Rick McKee was appointed director of estimating for Pacific Interior Systems, general contractors. He has more than 22 years in construction and formerly was v.p. of construction for American Assets Inc. in San Diego. Louis J. Phillips, with a background in corporate and gaming management, was named CEO of Viejas Business Enterprises by the Viejas Tribal Council. He succeeds John Winkelman, who continues as adviser to the Viejas Band. Phillips was president and COO of Harrah's Nevada. Miles Scully is new managing partner in the San Diego office of Gordon & Rees litigation firm. Others added to the local office were litigators James McMullen and Russell Brown; and attorney Margaret Bell. Elevated to partners were Ted Armbrister and Burt Boltuch. Crystal Garcia was named Southern California regional marketing director. Wells Fargo named Jack Peluso as v.p. and regional sales manager of the bank's San Diego Private Client Services Group. He had been with Prudential securities since 1987. Other appointees are Ted Buchan and Kevin Dyerly, both named v.p. and financial consultant for private client services. Both also previously were with Prudential Securities. Michael Matthews, formerly assistant v.p. of Marsh USA, joined the Arrowhead Group of Companies. A 10-year insurance industry veteran, he is v.p. and g.m. of Arrowhead's newly formed special projects unit. Burkett & Wong Engineers named William Templeton, principal associate, as manager of the civil engineering design department. He joined the firm in 1987. Gerard J. Buckley was appointed executive director and chief development officer of Vista Hill. His 20-year career as a fund-raiser includes 12 years with Scripps Memorial Hospitals Foundation. Newly named v.p. of operations at Vista Hill is Robert E. Dean, who completed 19 months as COO of Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital. City National Bank appointed Jeff Stites senior v.p. and manager of the San Diego real estate loan center, based in La Jolla. A 15-year veteran of San Diego banking, Stites was in the construction loan department of San Diego National Bank. Adrian Kwiatkowski joined the Monger Co., a communications firm that specializes in governmental relations, as an account executive. The company’s clients include Alliance Healthcare Foundation, the Corky McMillin Cos., and the San Diego Port The National Dispatch Center Inc. appointed Graham McMillan as controller. Prior to joining NDC, McMillan worked for W.G. Best of San Diego, Sorrento Associates Inc. and Solatube International Inc. as controller. ConfirmNet Corp., a business-to-business insurance company, named Daniel F. McCarthy Jr. v.p. of sales. He formerly was in charge of workers' compensation for the western United States for Cigna in San Francisco. CAIS Software Solutions appointed Steve Wimsatt as v.p. of market development. His 15 years of experience include serving as v.p. of marketing for HNC Telecommunications Solutions. CAIS develops high-speed Internet access software. Attorneys admitted to the law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps are Kay Catherwood, whose specialty is bankruptcy law; Mike Fraunces, business practice group; Ron Getchey, insurance and reinsurance practice group; Maria Cristina Heredia, labor and employment law practice group; and Carol Kao, trusts and estates practice group. All are in the San Diego office of the national firm. Also joining the firm was Michael A. Attanasio, recently a trial lawyer with the United States Department of Justice, Criminal Division, Public Integrity Section in Washington, D.C. Randy Lankford, director of community relations for AT&T, was selected for the board of the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation & Polinsky Children's Center Foundation. He has been with AT&T for 19 years. Richard K. Brown was promoted to president of IRORI, a subsidiary of Discovery Partners International. Before joining the company in 1996, he was director of marketing at Zymark Corp. His promotion accompanied an announcement that Discovery and its subsidiaries moved to a new location in San Diego’s Eastgate Technology Park. David Salud is senior project manager for Howard Sneed Architecture & Design. Most recently he was with Moon Mayoras Architects, but his 21 years of experience includes working for the Stichler Group, Carrier Johnson, McGraw/Baldwin Architects, SGPA Planning & Architecture and owing his own firm, Designers Ink. Promoted to project superintendent for Johnson & Jennings General Contracting were Robert Mudd and Ron Chapman. Mudd joined the firm in May of 1998. He has been in the construction industry 12 years, working for Health Care Group and Timber Ridge Framing. Chapman has been in construction 27 years and formerly was a project manager for Pacifica/ICS. Rod Gilliland is v.p.-sales & marketing, for the San Diego Division of Ryland Homes, which includes San Diego, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Most recently he was a senior adviser with a Far Eastern conglomerate. Anita A. Payne joined the San Diego Division of Ryland Homes as branch manager of Ryland Escrow Co. She has been in the escrow business in San Diego since 1985. Venture Catalyst Inc. hired Jon Cohen as director of multimedia. Active for 10 years in the media and Internet fields, Cohen's clients have included Nintendo and MTV. Attorneys Jacqueline Stein and Jeff Simenton as principal and associate respectively joined the law firm of Berger Kahn. Stein, who was with Selman and Breitman for the past two years, is in the firm's insurance defense practice. Simenton was with a Mission Viejo firm. Shirali Mehta joined the Nuancing Group as a trainee and marketing assistant. She is a recent college graduate. Insurance industry executive Daniel F. McCarthy Jr. joined San Diego-based ConfirmNet Corp. as v.p. of sales. He leaves a position as v.p. of Workers' Compensation in the Pacific region at Superior National Insurance Corp. His insurance experience dates to 1984. Honored by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service were Rosa Vasquez, branch secretary of the South Bay Branch, who received the Helping Hands award for service beyond the call of duty, and Ned Painter, financial counselor, who received the Heads-Up Award for suggesting and overseeing implementation of several programs to improve customer service. Newly hired by Collins General Contractors are the following: Martin O'Brien, estimator, with 23 years in construction; Frank Bathrick and Gary Stanhope, project managers; Debbi Nichols and Teri Lehoe, project coordinators; Rick Thomason, project superintendent; and Rich Buell, project engineer. New principals in the San Diego office of the Stichler Group, a design firm, are Jerry Jensen, in construction administration for more than 20 years, and Ward Thompson, with 22 years of international expertise. Greg Block was promoted to v.p. by Berkman Communications, which he joined in 1995. He directs the e-communications division of the firm. Roel Construction hired Keith Cardinale as project manager and promoted Donna Vargo from v.p. to executive v.p./tenant improvement group. Cardinale most recently worked for DPR Construction Inc. of San Diego. Vargo joined Roel's tenant group eight years ago. Susan Spanos joined the University of San Diego's board. A philanthropist and community volunteer, she was Woman of the Year for the Leukemia Society last year. Her husband, Dean, is president of the San Diego Chargers. New employees at University of San Diego are Christopher Redo, director of development for the School of Business Administration; Cheryl H. Dean, acting director of planned giving in the Division of University Relations; Elizabeth Harrington, assistant dean for development and external relations for the School of Law; and Wendy Nalbandian, associate director of alumni relations for the School of Law. Redo most recently was founding CEO of a public/private partnership that operated the city of Seattle's municipal golf course. Dean was graduated from USD Law School and practiced in estate planning and corporate transactions. Harrington was director of development at Rice University in Houston, and Nalbandian was assistant director of alumni relations at University of California at Berkeley. Superior Court Judge Charles L. Patrick retired after 36 years in the criminal justice system and 12 years on the bench. He was assistant chief of the Major Violator Unit when he was appointed to the former San Diego Municipal Court in 1988. Eric Comer was named senior associate with CB Richard Ellis in its San Diego Central office. He is a multi-housing investment sales specialist. Allyson McGrory also joined the San Diego office as a marketing specialist focusing on office properties. Ninteman Construction Co. promoted Joseph Grosshart to director of preconstruction services and Steven Dunlap to chief estimator. Grosshard joined Ninteman in 1998, Dunlap in 1997. New at Ninteman is Gene Hussey, a 25-year veteran of construction and development industries, as v.p., manager of general construction. Lisé Markham, v.p. and general manager of KSWB 5/69, was named chair of the San Diego Communications Council at San Diego State University. For the past 10 years, the council has been a forum for competing industries from broadcasting, cable, newspaper and other media to dialog and compare trends in technology and public policy. Gary Kline is a new property manager and leasing agent for Evanco Realty Advisors Inc. He has more than 20 years in commercial real estate. Lori Watson was named senior consulting manager and Stan Sewitch named consulting managing director at RSM McGladrey Inc. Watson was formerly director of staffing services at HRG Inc., the Human Resources Group. Sewitch was president and founder of HRG Inc. A. J. Modig, with Utopia Realty in San Diego, was awarded the designation of Real Estate Innovator by Realty Publishing. The honor recognizes extraordinary service to home sellers. Paul Sanchez was named executive v.p. for Stoorza Ziegaus & Metzger Inc. In addition to serving clients statewide, Sanchez will be g.m. of the company’s San Diego office. For this position, Sanchez returns to San Diego after many years on the East Coast. Bilbro Construction Co., a general contracting firm, hired Nghi Le as controller and Cortni Sable as project engineer. The Sutherland Agency hired Ken Baxter as v.p., marketing. He has five years of strategic planning and marketing management experience at other firms. The San Diego Pulmonary Society elected Dr. James R. Vevaina president. He practices in San Diego. David Price was named assistant chief of the County Probation Dept. to replace James Poe, who retires this month. Price has been deputy chief for five years. He joined the force in 1967 and has served in all probation function areas. He became probation's expert on the determinate sentencing law. Named health services director at Casa de Mañana Retirement Community in La Jolla was Carol Speakman. Her 15 years in the field includes serving as administrator of convalescent and skilled nursing centers. Michelle Smith joined Graham Downes Architecture Inc. She is an interior designer who worked in Seattle before moving to San Diego. The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising named Tracy Wallace as resource and research center coordinator. MC Direct, with headquarters in Poway promoted Michael Campbell to account supervisor. He joined the direct marketing firm in 1995. The company hired Shannon Dickson as an account executive. Leonard W. "Lee" Vena is the new group sales director for Community Health Group. He has 17 years of experience in health care sales and marketing, most recently with Omni Healthcare in Sacramento. Daniel G. Dangel was named managing partner at the San Diego based CPA firm of Lavine, Lofgren, Morris & Engelberg. He was a partner in the firm of KPMG Peat Marwick. Cousins Properties Inc. hired Thomas D. Lenny as senior v.p. of its Western region. He has more than 25 years of experience in commercial brokerage and development. Bill Rodewald was promoted to executive managing director for the Southwest Region of Colliers International, a commercial real estate company. In real estate for 20 years, Rodewald was with Grubb & Ellis for 12 years. In another promotion, Phil Wise became senior v.p. of Colliers. Before he joined the Golden Triangle Colliers office, Wise was with John Burnham & Co. for 11 years. Two appointments at San Diego County-based European Natural Stone Co. were Nina Newstead, office manager, and Dina Durante, warehouse manager. The company provides marble, granite, terrazzo, travertine and limestone. Pam Lanier won salesperson of the year at Escondido Motors, a Mercedes Benz dealer, for the second consecutive year and the fifth time since she joined the dealership in 1994. |
