Spend your summer in Balboa Park! Following is an extensive list of programs for children, teen and adults for the Natural History Museum, Hall of Champions, Museum of Man, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and the Model Railroad Museum. And don’t forget, six museums this year are participating in Balboa Park's Piggyback Program. Now in its third summer, the Piggyback Program is the result of cooperation between several of the most active institutions in Balboa Park. Spend the first half of the day at one institution, and switch to another after lunch! This year’s participating institutions are:

Jungle Giant Series
Open to kids ages 4-5 with an adult.

Gentle Giants
Find out some amazing ways plant-eating dinosaur herbivores protected themselves from meat-eating carnivores. Try grinding up prehistoric plants with life-sized dinosaur teeth. Knock out a T. rex with your horns. Stand in the footprint of the biggest dinosaur ever discovered. You'll have "TONS" of fun in a BIG way!

Hungry Hunters
From the mighty to the mini, you will discover how the meat-eating dinosaurs found and ate their food. Get up close and personal with the mighty Giganotosaurus. Teeny Babies

Mary Anning was a daring and knowledgeable woman who spent her lifetime exploring England's coastline for buried fossil treasures. Her discoveries of flying pterosaurs, swimming plesiosaurs, and ichthyosaurs caught the imaginations of scientists and the public all over Europe. Tan Your Hide

Did you know that every animal has enough brains to tan its own hide? Learn Native American techniques and adaptive contemporary methods to scrape and stretch rawhide into beautiful buckskin leather. Dinosaur Lives: Unearthing an Evolutionary Saga
Lecture and booksigning with Jack Horner
Special presentation for families
Celebrated paleontologist Jack Horner revolutionized our view of lost worlds, and our own. He will explain the enormous impact dinosaurs have on our own lives, from blockbuster films like Jurassic Park and The Lost World (for which Horner was technical adviser) to his cutting-edge research on how dinosaurs evolved, which throws light on how all species-humans included-arise and die out.

Flutter by with the Butterflies

Go behind the scenes at the Butterfly Vivarium in Encinitas, where hundreds of live butterflies are reared. Join an exciting day camp at Lake Poway where everyone gets to romp outdoors. From cooking lunch with hot rocks to competing in a stick throwing competition, all activities have been designed to increase awareness and knowledge of the outdoors. Moms are welcome too! La Jolla Shores Sea Caves and Kelp Beds for Father's Day

Take your dad on an exhilarating paddling tour of the world famous La Jolla Sea Caves. After a brief introduction to ocean conditions and waves, knowledgeable instructors will teach you the basics of rock garden paddling as you exploring the different caves and rock formations of this beautiful setting. Seal, sea lion, leopard shark, garibaldi, and pelican sightings abound in this magnificent underwater marine reserve.

Spectacular Morro Bay serves as our base of exploration on a fun family camping outing. Hike the rugged coastline of Montaña del Oro State Park, look for sea otters, and examine tide pools. Go batty during this evening field trip to Mission Trails Regional Park to observe a vampire's best friend in their natural environment. You'll enjoy a slide presentation at the Mission Trails Visitor Center and search for bats in the wild with the aid of a bat detector.

Mission Bay Exploration

This tour is a great introduction to kayaking as well as a scenic tour of one of San Diego’s most beautiful playgrounds. Highlights of Mission Bay include sea lion sightings, a wide variety of bird species, white sandy beaches, and a breathtaking view of Sea World that very few people ever see.

Wee Garden

Enjoy the whimsy of fairy lore and fairy etiquette as you enjoy crafts along with some Fairy Thyme tea (it is reputed to enable one to see fairies). Learn how to make a wee garden, perfect for luring fairies to your home or deck, out of a terra cotta saucer filled with tiny plants, a tiny fence, and many charming fairy accents. Parents may share the creative fun with their child, or sign up separately and create their own wee garden. Price includes all supplies.

San Diego Museum Of Man Offers Summer Adventures To Kids Of All Ages

Send your kids on a summer exploration of the mysteries of Egypt, the children of Africa, the art of Latin America, the intricacies of Stone Age and the Magic of the Mayans! Their passport to adventure is available this summer from the San Diego Museum of Man starting Monday, July 10 though Friday, August 25. The Museum has revved up an exciting variety of weekday children's camps. Offered to children from first to sixth grades and their families, the week-long classes will held from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

What is a day in the life of a dolphin like? And how do we really know? Get your hands on some great activities, slides, and stories as Dr. Michael Scott recounts some of the high points of a lifetime of research with four generations of bottlenose dolphins. Now a senior scientist with the Dolphin Program of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, Dr. Scott has been involved for the past 25 years in the studies of the bottlenose dolphins of Sarasota Bay, Florida.

What did the ancestors of dolphins look like? How do scientists tell different dolphins apart? How do the dolphins of Southern California fit into the picture of worldwide dolphin evolution?
