You'll have to excuse Bob Watkins for being a bit hard to reach these days. (At least for San Diego Metropolitan he was.) The founder of one of San Diego’s leading head hunting agencies, R.J. Watkins & Co. Ltd., has joined the Viejas tribe as president, and an observer says $250,000 sounds about right for his salary. Now Watkins, an Alpine resident, needs merely drive across I-8 to work. (His wife, Maggie Watkins, continues the commute to Luce Forward's offices Downtown.) While Watkins remains chair of the firm he founded in 1980, his new job meant promotion was in order, with Thomas M. Murphy being named partner, executive v.p. and managing director.
Principal Christopher T. Veum was named president of Austin Veum Robbins Parshalle, an interior design and engineering firm. Company founder Douglas H. Austin remains chairman and is director of design. Veum joined the company in 1991. Veteran real estate executive Jim Womack was named senior v.p. of the Douglas Wilson Cos. His 17 years of experience include positions with Home Capital Corp., Home Federal, Bank of America and CalTrans. Katherine M. Bush joined the law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP, as an associate in the San Diego office's business practice group. She most recently was a trademark attorney adviser with the United States Patent & Trademark Office in Arlington, Va.
Leap Wireless International Inc. appointed Stefan C. Karnavas as CFO of Cricket Communications Inc., a Leap subsidiary. He most recently was v.p. and CFO of Cobblestone Golf Group in San Diego. Kathleen Corbin Teora, director of Sempra Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of Fortune 500 company Sempra Energy, was selected by Leadership California as a member of its Annual Issues Program. This year-long program is limited to 50 top women leaders from California and is aimed at connecting them with other business leaders. Sheryl Charleston was promoted to v.p. and g.m. of CableRep Advertising, the advertising arm of Cox Communications. She has been g.m. of CableRep in San Diego since January 1997.
Kathy Gandolfo is v.p. and manager of the newly opened Kearny Mesa office of California Bank & Trust Burnham Real Estate Services promoted Ron Miller to senior v.p. of the firm's office properties division. He has been in real estate since 1985 and joined Burnham in 1996. Hired as an associate v.p. specializing in office leasing was Ken Kisbert. He has been in real estate for 13 years. Madeline King was promoted by John Burnham & Co. Insurance Services to v.p. with the employee benefits division. She was named one of the firm's top producers for 1999. She joined the company in 1989. High Technology Solutions Inc. appointed Peter O'Sullivan to lead a new interactive media division management team. He has 12 years of experience in the field. Working with him is Kobe Bogaert, director of marketing and business development, who cofounded Maxwell Interactive, and Tom Kaufeld, senior director of operations, previously manager of the Software Initiative Group for Titan Corp.
MusicMatch Inc. named William R. Caid senior v.p. of engineering. Since joining MusicMatch in September, Caid has led a team of scientists and engineers in the design of HiPP, the company’s community-based music recommendation engine. Before joining MusicMatch, Caid was co-founder and COO of Aptex Software Inc., a provider of real-time content mining software for online target marketing, advertising and product promotions. Attorney David Casey Jr., a specialist in serious personal injury and wrongful death and business and consumer fraud cases, was named a fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He is a senior partner in the San Diego-based firm of Casey Gerry Reed & Schenk, a firm his father founded 50 years ago. Ninteman Construction Co. promoted Robert D. Cashin from operations manager to v.p. He has been in construction since 1978 and with Ninteman for two and a half years. Newly hired by Ninteman was Thomas E. Tourtellott, director of marketing. He was previously with Nielsen Dillingham Builders. Pountney & Associates Inc. added David Keltner as a senior project manager. He has more than 27 years of experience in civil engineering plan design of public works. Jay D. Alexander was promoted to senior v.p. by Colliers International, where in 1999 he was one of the top 10 producers in the county. He has been with Colliers for more than seven years. Patty Krebs, executive director of the Industrial Environmental Association, was named to the board of the San Diego Transit Authority.
Jenny Kennett was promoted to v.p. of design at Design Line Interiors Inc. She has been with the firm since 1994. Formerly she was with Austin Hansen and McCall-Smith Design groups, both in San Diego. The sales and marketing department of San Diego-based Arrowhead Group of Companies, promoted Julie Church to assistant v.p. She heads the company’s internal and field marketing units. John Liarakos has joined UCSD Extension as manager of marketing and promotional services. GTE Wireless promoted Ken Christopher to g.m., indirect sales. Christopher began his career with GTE Wireless as a finance analyst in 1995, and has since served as indirect account manager in San Diego. James P. Schabarum II and Scott A. Bedingfield were appointed principals and shareholders by Cavignac & Associates. Both joined the company in 1996, Schabarum as head of the Construction and Surety Bond Department, and Bedingfield handling insurance and risk management solutions for real estate clientele. MC Direct has promoted Adele Atchley to account executive. She joined MC Direct in 1996. Viejas Chairman Anthony Pico received Grossmont College's Walk of Fame Award. He has been chairman of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians for 18 years and credits the Grossmont College faculty and staff with helping him strengthen his commitment to Indian self-sufficiency. John M. Renfro of Rancho Santa Fe, was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame at the Carbondale campus of Southern Illinois University, College of Business and Administration. Renfro is senior v.p. of human resources at Gateway Inc. Allen Matkins Leck Gamble & Mallory elected attorney Martin Togni to partner in their San Diego office. Togni specializes in real estate law, focusing on leasing. The National Dispatch Center Inc. promoted Mark Wooster to v.p. and COO for its Wireless Messaging Division. Wooster, a CPA, joined NDC in August of 1999 as controller. Prior to joining NDC, he worked as CFO for Health Examinetics and ImageWare Software Inc. and v.p./controller for Medical Wherehouse Club. Kimberly Haile was promoted to senior v.p. of Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm Digital Media. This will expand the leadership role she held as senior v.p. and g.m. of Qualcomm Digital Media, a division of Qualcomm. She joined Qualcomm in 1989 as a member of OmniTRACS. Before joining Qualcomm, she practiced business law with Gray, Cary, Ames and Frye. Martin Imhof joined T.B. Penick & Sons as director of business development of the general contracting division. He has 20 years of sales and business development experience in construction and was named the AGC Affiliate of the Year in 1996. Frank R. Klemaske was appointed director of business development for Innovative Concrete Surfaces, a division of T.B. Penick & Sons. He directs national and international sales and marketing. Peter Sanchez joined Graham Downes Architecture Inc. as a job captain. His eight years of experience include work at Smith Consulting Architects and Fehlman-Labarre Architecture & Planning. Grubb & Ellis promoted Joseph L. Greeno to v.p. Greeno joined the company in 1990 and has been in sales and leasing of shopping centers for more than 15 years. Al Hackman joined Grubb & Ellis' investment services group. Most recently he was with Marcus & Millicha. Barona Casino hired Las Vegas gaming expert Lee Skelley as assistant g.m. of casino operations. He formerly was the v.p. of gaming operations for Ameristar Casino Inc. Concepts Worldwide named Cindy Schtur director of operations. Previously she was director of the corporate meeting division of Gateway Travel Management in Pittsburgh. McGraw/Baldwin Architects promoted Philip Pape to project manager, and Ken Hess and Philip Macey to associates. Pape has been with the firm since 1992; Hess joined in 1998, Macey in 1997. Aonix appointed Gene Kennon as senior v.p. of marketing. Since 1990, Kennon has been corporate v.p. of marketing and computer products division chief operations officer at VisiCom. He previously filled the program director's position. Sharene Patricola, a 33-year banking veteran, joined Southwest Community Bank as senior v.p./cashier. Most recently, she was a branch administrator at Bank of Commerce. Syntricity Inc. named Andrew J. Pease as v.p. of worldwide sales, and Donald W. Brooks to its board. Pease formerly was v.p. of worldwide sales for Vantis Corp. Brooks is chairman of KLM Capital Group of San Jose. Tom Cartwright was promoted from director of marketing and public relations of The Transportation Network to g.m. for Premier Ride, the executive services division of TTN. The Network group also includes Yellow Cab of San Diego, La Jolla Cab, Crown City/Diamond Cab and Oceanside Yellow Cab. Cartwright has been with Premier Ride since it started more than five years ago. Halland executive v.p. of sales and marketing, effective May 1. He is v.p. and g.m. of the government education division of Ingram Micro. HDR Engineering hired Eric A. Weel as a project manager and Rebecca L. Loomis and Michael s. Powers as environmental specialists. in its San Diego office. Weel is experienced in planning, design and water and wastewater operations. Beverly Stewart joined Neighborhood National Bank as v.p./manager of business banking. Stewart's 30 years in banking includes most recently a position as v.p./administrator of government guaranteed loans with Valle de Oro Bank. Joining MJE Marketing Services were Kevin Christensen, marketing communications coordinator, and Tarsha Ford, office and production manager. John Hammond, a contractor with 30 years of experience in home building, joined Ryland Homes' San Diego division as manager of offsite purchasing. He spent 26 years with Standard Pacific. Marcie Little was promoted to marketing director of the San Diego division. She has 17 years of experience in new home sales and marketing. Lee Didier, with more than 30 years of accounting experience, was appointed controller of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of San Diego. Betty Hackett, who has five years in management positions in social services, was named director of counseling. Anna-Marie Marchesi, marketing director for Design Line Interiors, is the new president of the San Diego Building Industry Association's Sales and Marketing Council.
