| Chairman, CEO and founder of Science Applications International Corp. J. Robert Beyster was selected Engineer Manager of the Year by the American Society of Engineering Management. He was honored for founding and building SAIC, an employee-owned research and engineering firm.
George Lattimer was elected chair of the Centre City Development Corp. board. He was first appointed to the board in 1996. He had a real estate career in Rancho Bernardo and since 1987 has been an independent investor. Other elected board officers were Doug Austin, vice chair; Julie Dillon, treasurer; and Ed Bacani, secretary. Peter Q. Davis was welcomed back to the board and was elected chair of the Ballpark Committee.
Samuel Jeppson was named executive v.p. and chief credit officer for San Diego National Bank. He will work out of the Downtown headquarters. He has been in banking for more than 25 years.
Gerald R. Dinkel, a defense industry executive with more than 30 years of experience, was named a corporate v.p. of Cubic Corp. and CEO of the corporation’s defense group of companies. He succeeds Walt Fairbanks, who is retiring after more than eight years with Cubic but will remain on the board. Dinkel was with Westinghouse Electronic Systems in Baltimore for 28 years. Qualcomm Inc. promoted Louis Lupin to general counsel, replacing Steve Altman, executive v.p., who now assumes increased management responsibilities. Lupin joined Qualcomm in 1995 as senior legal counsel. He was promoted to v.p., proprietary rights, and then to senior v.p. Before joining Qualcomm, he was a partner with Cooley, Godward, where he focused on intellectual property litigation in the telecommunications, software and biotechnology industries. Also promoted by Qualcomm was Gary W. Garland, v.p. of business development, to v.p. and general manager of Qualcomm Digital Media. Garland joined the company in 1992 after leaving Logicon Inc. Diane Eggleston was promoted to marketing manager for Gafcon Inc. She joined the company as a project coordinator in 1993. In her new position she is responsible for coordinating all marketing materials and attendance at trade shows, conferences and special events. Zucotto Wireless Inc. announced that Dave Wenk is chief marketing officer. During his 10 years in the field he has held senior marketing and product management positions with Uniden, Integrated Systems and Hughes Network Systems. Roel Construction promoted Doug Briggs from senior project manager to group manager. A 26-year veteran of the construction industry, he joined Roel in 1997. New associates in the San Diego office of Baker & McKenzie are Katherine A. Bacal, litigation practice group, formerly with Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher; Jason J. Belice, corporate and securities practice group, formerly director of business affairs and general counsel for Cove Healthcare Inc.; Thomas D. Bunton, litigation practice group; formerly a law clerk for Judge Michael S. Kanne, United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; Colin H. Murray, litigation practice group, formerly deputy district attorney in San Diego County; Elizabeth R. Potts, also with the litigation practice group, who received her juris doctor, magna cum laude, from University of San Diego School of Law this year; and Genevieve Chestnut, estate planning and tax group, formerly an associate with Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek.
Former U.S. Attorney Charles G. La Bella joined the international law firm of McKenna & Cuneo. He is known in San Diego for the successful prosecution of a corruption case that resulted in bribery convictions of three superior court judges and a civil attorney. The firm strengthened its construction expertise by adding attorney Peter J. Ippolito. Peg Reiter was promoted from associate to assistant v.p. of corporate human resources for ProjectDesign Consultants. Also promoted was Jim Kilgore, to assistant v.p. Both joined the firm in 1993. Dave Ragland was promoted to senior v.p. in land development engineering. He was hired in 1997. Newly hired was Mike Schatz, assistant v.p. of construction management. Formerly he was with Collins Development Co. Michael S. Moore and Heidi M. Hurd, University of Pennsylvania law professors, joined the University of San Diego School of Law where they will start a national institute on law and philosophy. Moore formerly taught at the University of California, Berkeley in the Boalt Hall School of Law, and the USC Law Center.
Sempra Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, appointed Leah Bissonette v.p. of U.S. regional sales. Most recently she was a senior account director with Williams Energy and Trading Market. Three of four open board seats for Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich have been filled by election of attorneys working out of the San Diego office. They are Jeffrey Shotet, Southern Region managing partner; Doug Rein, who runs the corporate and securities group in the San Diego office; and Don Rushing, who envisioned the merger in January 1994 that created today’s firm.
Timothy Malott, a partner at Shoreline Partners, a merger and acquisition firm specializing in corporate sale assignments, was elected to a two-year term as president of the Association for Corporate Growth/San Diego. This is one of 36 chapters throughout the world. Michael Schultz was hired as director of operations by Concepts Worldwide, an international meeting and event planning company. His 20 years of experience include directing event services at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel in Dallas. Also hired by the company was Elaine Kady, national account executive, who will focus on the pharmaceutical and high-tech industries. She formerly worked with large hotels. Arlene Sacks, a La Jolla real estate agent for 24 years and associate of the Willis Allen Co. since 1994, received this year’s McNaught-Davis Knox Award. This annual honor is given by the La Jolla Real Estate Brokers Association, to the agent who demonstrates outstanding salesmanship, community service, personal character, cooperation with associates and service to the real estate profession. Recently appointed public relations director for the New Car Dealers Association is Amy Henderson. She was director of promotions for the Acura Tennis classic for five years and recently was director of marketing and public relations for a Wayne Gretzky organization. She replaces Lauren Holzman, who after five years moved to Liberty West Productions as media contact for the Auto Show. Sharon Hays becomes the media relations representative for United States International University this month. She replaces Anita Gomes, who has held the position for nine years. Gomes moved to Gateway where she is manager of community relations. Another USIU appointment is that of George Stamos, interim director of teacher education. He fills the position vacated by Janet Castanos, who was named a dean at Grossmont College. Patricia “Pat” Mitchell was promoted to v.p. of human resources for Cox Communications which has nearly 2,000 employees throughout the county. Mitchell, who has more than 17 years of experience in human resources, joined Cox Communications in 1995 as Western Region director of training and organization development. Appointed chief technology officer for MoneataOne was Joseph Nebel. He was promoted from the position of v.p. of research and development. Jack in the Box Inc. appointed Stephanie Cline as corporate v.p. and CIO to oversee the company’s management information systems and energy management activities. She was division v.p. of systems development. She has been with Jack in the Box for 23 years. Veteran sales and promotions executive James B. Burnside joined Online Asset Exchange as national g.m. He was sales manager in the worldwide commercial and consumer equipment division of the John Deere Co. He has 14 years in his field. West Coast Aquarium Industries named T.J. Adkins director of sales and designs. Her 10 years of experience includes working with the Environmental Defense Fund and Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals. Bradford Perry joined Burnham Real Estate Services as v.p. and team leader for office leasing in the Ballpark District and Downtown. Previously he was with Northwest Asset Management. He has 10 years of experience in leasing management. SeatAdvisor.com added David Taylor as product manager. He has more than 20 years of experience in the ticketing industry including serving as area manager for the ETM Entertainment Network Inc. in Dallas. The international law firm of McKenna & Cuneo added attorney Peter J. Ippolito and two of his partners from his construction practice, Mark G. Budwig and Steven S. Owen. Ippolito has 25 years of experience in construction law. Budwig was an engineer before becoming an attorney, and Owen has been in the field for nine years. Career services firm Lee Hecht Harrison named Maggie Osburn and Kathi Karen to v.p.s of business development. Osburn previously worked for Gulfstream Aerospace, and Karen’s 15 years of experience includes eight years with Gengraphics. Architects Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker named three new associates: Neal McFarlane, with 12 years of experience; Frank Ternasky, who was co-project manager on Qualcomm Building L; Markely Mills, a recent UCSD grad. Named interim director of development at Alliance Healthcare Foundation was Lynda Heaney. She moved to Alliance from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD where she handled several aspects of fund-raising. At Alliance she will develop a gift planning annuity program and stewardship activities. Global professional services firm Ernst & Young promoted Robert Bruning and Daniel Kleeburg to partners. Bruning, an expert in consumer products, was with the firm from 1986 to 1993 when he became CFO for Cobra Golf. He returned to Ernst & Young in 1998. Kleeburg, who provides accounting, auditing and advisory services for emerging high-tech companies, joined the company in 1986. Promoted to director of new home sales for Ryland Homes’ Southern California Division was Charlene D. Bates. She is a 13-year veteran of the home building industry and formerly was branch manager for Ryland Mortgage Co. Collette McLoughlin was appointed assistant v.p./loan officer for Neighborhood National Bank, a subsidiary of Neighborhood Bancorp. She will be based in the bank’s headquarters branch in Southeast San Diego. Appointed controller was Ricardo Huerta, a bank employee since 1998. Formerly he was a financial analyst with FPA Medical Management and with Kaiser Permanente-Medicare. A health care executive with more than 17 years of experience, Jill G. Simoes, was appointed director of sales for Clinteligent, the application service provider arm of CliniComp International. Simoes was regional v.p. of sales for Professional Staff Management Inc. IngleWood Ventures, a life science and medical venture capital fund, named Killu Tougu Sanborn to a newly created associate position. Prior to this, Sanborn was director of technology commercialization at La Jolla-based Stratagen. Andrew Blank, with a decade of experience, was hired as a certified instructor by MicroSkills. He will teach Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and Certified Novell Educator classes. Turner Construction Co. appointed Jerry A. Marcis as project manager. His 18 years of experience includes his most recent project, Soka University of America’s laboratory/medical and data center. Turner also appointed Lisa Harris as office manager of the main office in Mission Valley. She was previously a consultant for BCC Inc. and the San Diego Convention Center. IdeaEDGE Ventures, an Internet venture management firm, hired Thomas Carney as v.p. and general counsel. Formerly he was senior v.p., general counsel and corporate secretary of Pharmacopeia. Resolution experts JAMS added former San Diego County Superior Court Judge Thomas R. Murphy to its roster of neutrals. His 15 years of superior court experience and before that his time in municipal and family court and as a practicing attorney prepared him for problem resolving. The La Jolla Chamber Music Society promoted Kathryn Martin to managing director from her former position as g.m. of SummerFest La Jolla, the society’s three-week chamber music festival held each August. In the newly created position, she will handle day-to-day administration for the society. Michelle Livesay and David Zoratti joined Nuvonix as account executives. Livesay has experience with Nextlink Communications, the Union-Tribune and ICG Communications. Zoratti most recently was with Eltec Enterprises. Washington Mutual hired Art Rivera to head its community economic development activities in San Diego. His 18 years of experience include government financial work and owning and operating his own commercial loan brokerage business. Dot Hill Systems Corp., designer, manufacturer and provider of data storage and storage area network solutions, hired Richard Search as senior v.p. of marketing communications. Formerly he was v.p. of marketing and product management for Hitachi Data Systems. North American Mortgage Co. named Cathy Wookey as loan officer for the University City office. She has worked in the residential lending business for a year following 10 years as a senior engineer for an aerospace company. New at the Banker’s Hill C. Spa Salon is hair stylist Gina D’Amico. Before becoming a stylist two years ago, she was a customer service representative in communications at Nordstrom in La Jolla. AMN Healthcare Inc. named Denise L. Jackson as general counsel and v.p., administration. She formerly was v.p. and senior counsel for the Mills Corp., a real estate investment trust that develops, owns and operates shopping centers. Paul Fromer, a biologist with Recon, received an award from the San Diego Chapter of the Association of Environmental Professionals. The Outstanding Contribution to the Environmental Profession honors lifetime achievements. He has been with Recon since 1980. Sally Hazzard was promoted by Lockheed Martin Corp. to California operations director for its Welfare and Workforce Services division. She previously was project director the those services in the San Diego and Los Angeles areas. Now she will oversee all state project directors. Hazzard formerly was director of the Chula Vista Coordinating Council and Solutions South Bay. John R. Lamb Sr. was appointed director of electrical engineering for LSW Engineers California Inc. His 30-plus years in the field include for the past five years serving as president and founder of Lamb Consulting Engineers. Moving to the firm with him are his son, John Lamb Jr., senior electrical engineer; Noel Wilshusen, electrical designer and inspector; and Kevin Sheppard, electrical draftsman. Angela Sheffield joined North County Transit as director of fiscal & support services. Her prior experience includes five years as director of management services for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority. Kris Aasted was named v.p. of the Technology and Venture Practice of Christian & Timbers, a national executive search firm. A La Jolla resident, he will work out of the company’s Irvine office, which services San Diego. Aasted formerly was a partner with Heidrick & Struggles International. The San Diego Division of the Hughes Network System appointed Mahesh Bhave as v.p. of business development. A native of India, he taught at City University of New York in Manhattan for four years. Bilbro Construction Co., a San Diego-based general construction firm, named Rick Bilbro as project engineer for its OnCall facility services department. A United States Coast Guard retiree, he served 22 years. Full professorships were awarded to Coleman College educators David C. Allen, on the faculty for 10 years; Marianne Kiszkay, a teacher at Coleman for 9 years; and Philomena Sefranek, who is site manager at the college’s Mission Valley operation. Rolando resident Joe Chan was selected to participate in the first-ever Students as Technology Leaders national conference representing Coleman College. He graduates this month from the Coleman Computer Applications Network program. The International Council of Shopping Centers gave a Maxi award to both Grossmont Center’s Monica Jones, marketing director, and Mike Hansen, director, for implementing a market plan designed by CB Richard Ellis. The concept, “What’s a good movie without popcorn?” was developed for the center’s year-long expansion. Advertising veteran Camille Sobrian was named v.p. of marketing in a new position created by matthews/mark, a full service marketing communications firm. Previously she was executive v.p. of strategic development with Empower Media Marketing. Hired at the firm was Karl Backus, art director. He was art director at J. Walter Thompson in San Francisco. Hired by Santel Federal Credit Union were Michael A. Sterns, v.p. of marketing and quality service, and Nelda Patterson, indirect lending manager. Sterns was with Triad Marketing most recently. Patterson held the same position with Members Acceptance Co. Cristi Johnston was named office manager and marketing coordinator for the Carlsbad Dental Office. She has been in the dental field for 11 years. Evanco Realty Advisers Inc., a commercial real estate company, hired Michelle Tennier as assistant accountant. Gary Erbeck, director of the county’s Department of Environmental Health, was installed as president of the California Conference of Directors of Environmental Health. Before becoming director in 1998, Erbeck directed the environmental health services department in Santa Barbara. Gary Klein, with 25 years of experience in golf course management, was named g.m. at Meadow Lake Golf Course in Escondido. Previously he assisted with construction of Coral Canyon Golf Club in St. George, Utah. Named g.m. at Castle Creek Golf Course, also in Escondido, was Phil Vigil. He has been in golf course management for 10 years, including being golf operations manager at La Costa Resort and Spa. Both courses are managed by Evergreen Alliance Golf Ltd. Cheri Lucas was promoted from senior accountant to accounting manager for the Walters Management Co. She has been on the staff for 12 years. Malinda Marshall joined the McRae Agency as an account coordinator. She is a recent UCSD graduate. Veteran architect Ralph S. Linder was promoted to associate principal in the San Diego office of Austin Veum Robbins Parshalle, an architecture, interior design, planning and engineering firm. He has been with the company for seven years. Promoted to associates in the firm were Zane Ely, project manager for the $100 million Park Laurel condominium project; Dawn K. Peyton, who also has been with the firm for seven years; and David Stellar, with 18 years of experience. Kristin Demkey and Michelle Renaud joined Meissner Jacquet, a real estate investment management company. Demkey, property manager, has been in property management for 12 years, most recently with Burnham Real Estate Services. Renaud, an assistant property manager, has six years of experience. Formerly she was a property manager with DDR OliverMcMillan. CPA Alan Blitz joined Blitz, Lee and Co. He formerly was a manager with KPMG-Peat Marwick. Most recently he has worked in Mexico City providing financial services for American executives working abroad. Ed Fansler was appointed sales manager of Barney & Barney. Before joining Barney & Barney, Fansler spent 25 years in the insurance industry and was a principal owner of a firm in Santa Barbara. Dan Hopwood joined the company as director, risk consulting. Previously he was v.p. of risk control for Marsh Risk and Insurance Services in La Jolla. Hope Anderson, a senior business analyst with San Diego Gas & Electric, was elected president of the board for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, San Diego Area Chapter. She has served on the board since 1995 and has worked for SDG&E since 1986. Virginia Hobbs was elected Desert Coast Region governor of Soroptimist International of the Americas, a service organization for women in business, management and the professions. She joined Soroptimist in 1981. She is president of Corporate Developers of America. Michael Sliney joined Grice, Lund & Tarkington. Before joining the firm he worked for four years for a start-up company. Gail Littman was named special programs officer for the Community Foundation of the United Jewish Federation. Littman has been a leader in San Diego Jewish community for more than 20 years, working with the San Diego Agency for Jewish Education as coordinator of adult education. Tracy Morgan Hollingworth is the new press and media contact for the San Diego Association of Realtors. During a 12-year tenure with the organization, Hollingworth worked in several capacities.
