An Inspiring Doctor

Surgeon Jacob DeLaRosa shares his story
with others in the health care field

As a chief resident in general surgery at UCSD Medical Center, 30-year-old Jacob DeLaRosa has been a dynamic teacher and good example to the younger residents and medical school students.

His own terrible accident inspires DeLaRosa to speak at national meetings and to San Diego health care providers. Two years ago while jogging in La Jolla, he was hit head-on by a car going 55 mph. He under went two major operations, followed by a two-month hospital stay, and learned to walk again in rehab. DeLaRosa hopes his story will be an awakening experience for other providers who take care of the critically ill. He plans to go to Emory University in Atlanta for a two-year fellowship, then return to San Diego to be a cardiothoracic surgeon.

DeLaRosa has devoted time to patients at San Diego Hospice, serves as a UCSD minority medical student adviser and is a member of the California Medical Association. He has attained numerous achievements and awards, such as the University of California Department of Surgery M & M Award, California Medical Association Leadership Award, and serving as guest editor of the Association of American Family Physicians Exchange Newsletter, to name just a few.

A hard-working doctor, Jacob DeLaRosa kicks back on a Peruvian vacation.
