Though she has been teaching for only three years, 29-year-old Michelle Walsh has made many positive changes at Cajon Valley Middle School. Not only does she teach English, math, science and history to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students who have lived in the United States less than one year, she also has re-vamped the year-book program and launched an after-school program where kids learn Adobe PageMaker, sales, writing techniques and customer service. As the coordinator of the AVID program, Walsh helps prepare minority students for a rigorous college prep curriculum, and she also advises Club Live, which promotes positive youth development and teaches drug, alcohol and tobacco use prevention. Walsh serves on the district library and English Language Development standards committees, and is a member of the local Phi Beta Kappa chapter. This year she was named Adviser of the Year by the San Diego County Office of Education for her work with Club Live. ![]() ‘Dorothy,’ aka Michelle Walsh, with fellow English Language Learner Program teachers, Juan Lopez and Laura Guerra. |
