Scouting Out Opportunities

A job that made a difference was
Jeffrey Young’s career goal

As a senior district executive with the Boy Scouts of America, Jeffrey G. Young, 31, manages the Heartland District Boy Scouts with 2,600 boys and 119 scout units. His East County district is the largest geographic district in San Diego, and his numerous duties include fund-raising, recruiting volunteers and members, and organizing community involvement.

Growing up in Orange County, Young came to San Diego to attend San Diego State University. He graduated in 1994 with a bachelor’s in political science. After earning his degree, Young wanted to find a job where he could help youth, serve the community and make a difference. He began with the Boy Scouts Sweetwater District in South Bay in 1995, and has been with the Heartland District for four years.

Outside of work, he is a reserve deputy with the San Diego Sheriffs Department, and a member of the search and rescue bureau, technical rescue team. Last month he received certification as a rescue specialist. As a Gulf War veteran in the Marine Corps, Young is a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
