The San Diego Telecom Council Mobile Wireless Special Interest Group is holding an informative panel discussion on the strategies that three companies are taking to support the next generation of applications.

From 7:30 to 9 a.m. April 3 at the Nokia facility, 12278 Scripps Summit Drive in Poway, representatives from Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and Nokia will debate how to best prepare for the future of the Third Generation.

James Carol, CEO, co-founder of PacketVideo Corp. will moderate a panel discussion on the strategies Qualcomm, Nokia and Texas Instruments are using to create flexible 3G platforms that can support tomorrow's applications.

Silicon Wave Inc. and Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas successfully demonstrated a Bluetooth CompactFlash card at the 2001 Wireless Portable Symposium and Exhibition in San Jose.

The project is the result of joint research and development activities by San Diego-base Silicon Wave and Japan-based Sharp Corp.

The demonstration showed that a new Sharp CF card, incorporating Silicon Wave's Odyssey chip-set solution for Bluetooth communications, can be optimized for use in several kinds of handheld devices, such as personal digital assistants. In addition, the CF card can be used with a PC Card adapter for use with notebook PCs.

"Silicon Wave is pleased to join Sharp Microelectronics in developing the industry's latest Bluetooth CompactFlash card solution," says Steve Brown, v.p. and g.m. of Bluetooth products at Silicon Wave. "The unique synergy between our two companies is indicative of our commitment to delivering a full-featured, optimized Bluetooth solution to the wireless market."

Ericsson announced the 3G cdma2000 Mobile Switching Center. Built on Ericsson's latest global AXE platform, the MSC will provide superior capacity and scalability in an exceptionally small package.

“By leveraging Ericsson's global platform technologies we are able to quickly bring highly competitive products to the market,” says Ake Persson, president of Ericsson CDMA Systems. “The MSC for cdma2000 is yet another example of Ericsson's technology leadership in switching platforms."

The cdma2000 MSC incorporates the Ericsson AXE platform used across all Ericsson mobile networks.

Leap Wireless International Inc. appointed Richard Robinson v.p. of mobile entertainment for the company’s wireless data development group.

In this capacity, Robinson will be responsible for establishing relationships with companies that can provide content to Leap wireless customers and developing a platform from which Leap can a build a broad base of entertainment offerings.

“Richard's combined understanding of the telecommunications, entertainment and data arenas will play a key role in our development of innovative new services for the mass consumer market," says Doug Hutcheson, Leap's senior v.p. of wireless data development. "Richard's expertise will round out our core team's expertise and is expected to further accelerate Leap's progress on the wireless data front."

Robinson brings to Leap more than 20 years of business and marketing experience in the interactive media and entertainment software publishing industries. His extensive management experience includes the roles of president and g.m. of GTE Interactive Media, as well as director of corporate development and strategic planning at GTE Directories Corp.

Last year, volunteers at The Lesbian & Gay Men's Community Center's four facilities logged more than 38,000 hours.

"This is the equivalent of 18 full-time employees," says executive director Art Thompson. "Volunteers are essential for the day-to-day activities and programming at the center. Without them, certain services could come to a screeching halt."

"Our front desk receptionists are all volunteers," reports Patti Plaster, director of facilities. “Add HARP (Holistic AIDS Response Program), Benefits Counseling, our Bridges program, discussion group leaders, Development Department, the library, newsletter production, Speakers Bureau, various administrative support, the Band, and Bingo and the total for the year 2000 was 38,365 hours. This number includes our four facilities: Centre Street, North County, Park Boulevard and the Hillcrest Youth Center. When valued at the national average wage, the center received $568,950 in volunteer support," she concluded.

Ensemble Communications Inc. has appointed Bill Sweeney to its executive team as v.p. of North America sales.

With more than 13 years of sales and market development experience in networking and telecommunications industries, Sweeney will manage the development and execution of all sales strategies and activities for the San Diego-based company throughout the United States and Canada.

"Bill's proven leadership and depth of market expertise will be vital to Ensemble as we are now delivering commercial systems to our flagship customers in North America," says Rami Hadar, Ensemble founder and executive v.p. of marketing and business development.

Prior to joining Ensemble, Sweeney spent seven years with Cisco Systems as director of worldwide market development for the company’s ATM business unit, where he managed the sales and business development activities, most recently focusing on competitive local exchange carriers in North America. He also served as Cisco's Western region sales manager, along with various other management and sales positions at the company.
