Qualcomm Inc. has worked out an evolutionary path that will enable CDMA2000 operators around the world to increase their voice network capacity by a factor of two when the evolved handsets are widely deployed.
The company says this increase is accomplished above and beyond the nearly twofold voice capacity improvement provided by third-generation CDMA2000 1X systems.
The improvements in voice network capacity, data services efficiency and overall quality of service are achieved within the existing technical specifications for CDMA2000, eliminating backward and forward compatibility issues and the need for development of a new standard.
"As we examine the future growth in wireless use and range of services and work together with cellular operators around the world, we recognize the economic need for real and substantial improvements in system efficiency," says Roberto Padovani, executive v.p. of research and development for Qualcomm. "In less than 10 years, the industry has witnessed a greater than tenfold voice capacity improvement over first-generation analog systems with the introduction of second-generation CDMA systems, a nearly twofold further increase achieved by third-generation CDMA2000 1X, and an order of magnitude performance improvement for data services through the introduction of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO. At the same time, penetration rates, minutes of use and demand for data services continue to increase while spectrum availability remains tight. The good news is that tested techniques are available to CDMA-based systems to win this race while further improving quality."

"As a U.S. Attorney, I worked diligently to end this type of criminal conduct and intend to work just as hard as a member of Upper Deck’s board."

Innercool Therapies Inc. of San Diego has released positive interim data that showed that time to achieve mild hypothermia and restore normal body temperature with its Celsius Control System is superior to traditional surface cooling methods.
All patients treated with the Celsius Control System reached and maintained target cooling temperature in the Temperature Control During Aneurysm Surgery clinical trial, versus only one of the patients treated with the control method of convective air blankets.
The safety profile was positive and showed no difference between the Celsius Control System and control method.
The data was presented by Dr. Gary Steinberg, professor and chairman, Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and principal investigator of the TCAS trial, at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons 51st annual meeting in San Diego.
The Celsius Control System is an endovascular catheter technology that exchanges heat directly with blood in the circulatory system to induce and/or reverse mild hypothermia (32 degrees C - 35 degrees C).
"We currently use mild hypothermia to protect the brain from tissue damage during aneurysm surgery but it has always been difficult to control the induction, maintenance and reversal of hypothermia using current surface cooling methods," Steinberg says. "This preliminary Celsius Control data is very encouraging and we look forward to continuing to explore this promising method to deliver hypothermic therapy."
"We are very encouraged by the interim results in the TCAS trial especially regarding the safety profile of the procedure and the effectiveness of the Celsius Control System in both obese and non-obese patients," says Dr. John Dobak, president and CEO of Innercool. "With the recent initiation of our ICTuS trial in acute ischemic stroke patients and fever control trial in patients who develop a fever after suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm, we are well positioned to progress rapidly with our clinical programs and development of the Celsius Control System."
