For the third consecutive week, prices at the pump last week declined throughout Southern California, reports the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch.
Further price declines are expected in the coming weeks as the soft economy reduces demand for gasoline in the face of ample supplies throughout the region.
The current price of regular unleaded self-serve in San Diego is $1.690, 3.4 cents lower than last week's average.
The Los Angeles/Long Beach reporting area is $1.555 per gallon, 3.6 cents lower than the price at this time last week.
“Traditionally, this is the softest time of the year in terms of motor vehicle travel and under normal circumstances we would expect to see low demand for gasoline," says Jeffrey Spring, Auto Club spokesman. "When you consider the impact to the economy of the events of September 11th, we expect to see even lower demand for gas for the next couple of weeks."

Leading corporations from a cross section of American industries — from transportation to financial services — have launched Back on Track America, a coalition dedicated to revitalizing the small business sector of America reeling from the economic fallout following the Sept. 11 attack on America.
Back on Track America will bring top experts in finance, human resources, marketing, technology, and legal issues to the doorstep of small businesses across the country via a cross-country train tour leaving Washington, D.C., in mid-November.
The coalition is committed to infusing the small business sector with the much-needed information it needs to stay in business at a time when faced with unprecedented challenges and when conferences and other more conventional sources of information have been cancelled.
Major corporations, associations and business organizations will bring free presentations, workshops, materials and counseling to public forums in key cities across the nation.
The San Diego stop is scheduled for December.
Five themes will be covered: Money, Management/People, Legal/Insurance/Taxes, Marketing, Technology and Starting Over.
Each event opens with three to four hours of free workshops and counseling sessions and closes with a Town Hall-style meeting.

The 2002 dates have been set by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, San Diego Area Chapter, for its annual two-day fund-raising 5K and 10K MS Walk.
On March 16, 2002, the ninth annual Carlsbad Flower Fields MS Walk will be held in Carlsbad. The next day, the 14th annual San Diego Harbor MS Walk will be held at the Embarcadero Marina Park behind Seaport Village.
The official name of the event is the San Diego County Credit Union MS Walk since San Diego County Credit Union, the largest credit union based in San Diego with 17 branch offices, is the title sponsor.
Last year, more than 8,800 people, 3,012 in Carlsbad and another 5,852 at Seaport Village, helped raise a record $1.12 million to fight the devastating effects of MS, a chronic, unpredictable and disabling disease that randomly attacks the central nervous system.
All walkers receive free breakfast, snacks and beverages, live music, a festive finish line celebration and an opportunity to earn prizes and walk away with the satisfaction that comes with helping others.
The event will begin at about 7:30 a.m. on both days. ***
