“I was working in the mortgage industry when the company I worked for was sold,” recalls Broekema, 38. “I realized that, because the mortgage business is so cyclical, it would fit well with the staffing industry. So I started my own business.” In 1994, Broekema opened On Call Employee Solutions Inc., a firm specializing in mortgage, accounting, financial and professional services and technology. Today, On Call has four regional offices in San Diego. As CEO and president, Broekema oversees all corporate activities including strategic planning and budgeting. Outside the office, Broekema also is a busy man. A member of the Century Club since 1987, he is on its board. He also has served on the board of the Gillespie School in La Jolla, Crime Stoppers and the Globe Theatres. On Call also has a policy of encouraging its employees to participate in community events and local charities. “My dad instilled in me to give back to the community,” says Broekema, who is originally from Tucson, Ariz. “I enjoy it and it’s also beneficial both professionally and socially. I’m steered toward groups that I enjoy.” Golf is a favorite activity for Broekema. He assists in the Century Club’s annual Buick Invitational, which contributes more than $1 million to charity. He also won the amateur portion of that event in 1999. A family man, he’s proud of his two young daughters. “I love my kids,” he says. “It’s important I be involved in their lives.
