Judging by the accomplishments of the 40 men and women whose profiles grace this 20-page section, the future of San Diego is in good hands. That’s a good thing. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce reports our over-75 population increased 40 percent in the last decade. It is a trend. This is the second year San Diego Metropolitan has collected nominations for the 40 Under Forty Awards. We started back in April, so it has been a long haul involving serious effort. The thinking is that too often it is our most seasoned business and civic executives who repeatedly bring home the gold. But how many awards does Irwin Jacobs need? OK. Bad example. He deserves a statue. But you get the point. As the region faces unprecedented social, business and lifestyle challenges, it will take a new crowd to chase down the dream. Some of the names and faces here are familiar. Most are not. But their successes are stellar. Heck, you should have seen the entry forms for the scores of candidates the judges had to turn away. Our judges are quite an impressive bunch themselves. They include John G. Davies, a regent with the University of California and of counsel at Allen Matkins Leck Gamble & Mallory; Randa Trapp, legal counsel to Sempra Energy; Sandy Ehrlich, director of the SDSU Entrepreneurial Management Center; Richard Cloward, executive director of the San Diego Port Tenants Association; Dennis Doucette, partner at Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps; Abi Barrow, director of the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering; Scott Barnett, executive director of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association; and Rick Sanborn, president of Palomar Community Bank. See? We thank them all. And of course Judy Case DiPasquale, executive director, and Suzanne McClain, special events director, at the YWCA. They have backed up an inspiring idea with hard work and support. Finally, this year we have added two major sponsors, Manpower and the Metropolitan Water District. We thank them, and our other sponsors as well. So do the residents of Becky’s House, a transition home for battered women and their children that benefits from this year’s 40 Under Forty awards luncheon. Read on and be impressed. Timothy J. McClain, editor |
