Determined to save the Easter bonnet from extinction, merchants and businesses in the Gaslamp Quarter are hosting the sixth annual Easter Bonnet Parade and Hat Contest on March 30. The 11 a.m. event will step off at the 400 block of Island Avenue, between Fourth and Fifth avenues. Funded by local businesses and a grant from the San Diego Foundation Dr. Seuss Fund, all proceeds benefit the UCSD Medical Center Department of Pediatrics Hematology/Oncology Program. For heads without bonnets, a hat making workshop will be held for adults and children. Cost is $6 for children and $12 for adults. The hat contest will be judged by local sports and television celebrities. An Easter egg hunt also is scheduled. Bonnets will be judged and prizes given for Most Glamorous, Funniest, Most Original and Best Vintage. Separate competitions will be held for boys and girls, as well as the Overall Most Outstanding Hat. Sponsors are being sought. For information, call (619) 239-4287. San Diego Metropolitan Staff
