Dealing For ‘Brain’ Dollars

Marsha Lubick, chief operating officer for Sharp HealthCare Foundation, is presiding over a multimillion-dollar capital campaign that will include financing for a complete makeover of 47-year-old Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Funds generated in the three-year fund-raising program also will help pay for a new outpatient pavilion at Sharp Memorial Hospital and a new intensive care unit and expansion of the emergency room at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center. Sharp will spend some $420 million on capital projects and system improvements over the next 10 years, says Lubick, 53, who has been with the foundation for two and a half years.

“We’re counting on the support of the community to accomplish these goals,” she says. Lubick came to Sharp HealthCare Foundation after spending 11 years with the Vista Hill Foundation. She worked for the Jewish Community Center and the United Jewish Federation for three years. She is a 1969 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and holds a master’s degree in public health from Yale University.

The foundation she runs not only supports the operation of Sharp Memorial Hospital and Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, but the Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women, Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital and Sharp Vista Pacifica. Grossmont and Coronado hospitals, which also are part of the Sharp HealthCare chain, have separate fund-raising foundations.

Sharp HealthCare Foundation’s capital campaign, which was launched earlier this year, is focusing on employee contributions. Lubick says she is particularly proud of the funds contributed by physicians, which will run more than $2 million at the campaign’s conclusion, and expects employee contributions to be substantial.

“It’s a wonderful feeling knowing we are investing in the future of the community,” she says. “Everyone is so excited about these projects. We all donate.” The foundation is tapping board members, physicians, health care employees and others before reaching out into the community for contributions. Then, says Lubick, “I’ll go out there and tell our story, people will get excited and choose to support us.”
