The North Coast Current, a new monthly publication in Encinitas, is the result of one man’s love of community and passion for journalism. Encinitas native Roman Koenig is paying for this endeavor out of pocket.

“I sold a car to raise the initial funds,” he says. A journalism professor, Koenig teaches news editing at SDSU and beginning news writing at Palomar College. The teaching income will generate additional funds while advertising revenue (hopefully) accrues. The Current has local competition in the Coast News and The News Paper, but stands alone as a monthly publication. It also focuses more on sports and Encinitas art and artists. Koenig plans to take a deeper look at community issues and provide some investigative articles with the extra time allowed by his printing schedule.

After only two issues, community response has been very supportive, he says, and overwhelmingly in favor of a new publication. “If it works, great,” Koenig says. “If not, that’s OK too.”

Koenig has a history in newspapers. He spent five years on the copy editing desk at the North County Times and for a year was an assistant news editor at The San Diego Union-Tribune. Doing his own publication has been a longtime dream.
