Alliant’s First Homecoming Beckons Alumni From Four Schools
|
What do Judge William Mudd and comedian Jamie Foxx have in common? They’re among the alumni of the campuses now known as Alliant International University. Founded in July 2001, Alliant’s first homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 25-26. Today, AIU consists of United States International University and the California School of Professional Psychology. The school was started in San Diego as Balboa College and later included California Western School of Law. Graduates, faculty and friends of those schools are invited to homecoming at the Scripps Ranch campus that formerly housed USIU. Activities range from a Friday fiesta and beer-tasting to an international buffet on Oct. 26. Events for the public include free presentations on topics from “Green Thinking” to “Strong Minds, Strong Athletes.” Some alumni can earn continuing education credit by attending a program titled “Sex Therapy in the Age of Viagra.” Alumni also can learn more about plans to expand academic offerings and new construction at the 60-acre Scripps Ranch campus. Architects SMWM of San Francisco are drawing up the master plan, and a sneak preview will be presented during the Oct. 26 dinner dance at the University Club. In November, university trustees will vote on conceptual drawings. Since AIU is an international university, the board is meeting in Mexico City. The plan eventually will go to the city of San Diego for approval. AIU has about 25,000 alumni and 23 chapters located around the world, says Patricia Wright, director of alumni relations and director of corporate and foundation relations. “This year’s inaugural event promises to set a precedent,” she says. “We have already received confirmation for attendance from alums as far away as Europe, Asia and Africa.” Alumni closer to home include Judy Chu, 49th District assemblywoman; Roberto Reyes, Baja undersecretary of economic development; Carol Wallace, San Diego Convention Center CEO; Peter Q. Davis, former Bank of Commerce CEO; Brian Wells, Starlight Theater creative director; actor Jack Tygett; Port Commissioner Stephen Cushman; Argentina ambassador Jorge Osello; Jeanne Lawrence, former owner of the Hotel del Coronado; and Richard Levak, consultant to “Survivor” and other television programs.
