Dr. Omero Suarez, chancellor of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, was elected to serve as the 2003 chairman of the San Diego Defense and Space Technology Consortium. Suarez has been a college teacher and administrator for more than 30 years.

Hal Sadler is the new chair of the CCDC board replacing Pete Davis who moved over to the Port Commission. Also elected to the board were Jennifer LeSar, Bank of America investment manager and senior v.p., and Victor Vilaplana.

Paul Azzi is the new branch manager of the La Jolla office of California Bank & Trust. Azzi has been with the bank since 1996, most recently as an assistant v.p. and personal banking officer.

PricewaterhouseCoopers’ local office has hired David Edquist as partner in the firm’s international tax services practice, Diane L. Gilabert as partner in the firm’s tax department and Maureen E. Pechacek as partner in the state tax consulting group. Edquist previously was a manager in the firm’s San Francisco, Moscow and Washington offices. Gilabert has more than 15 years of experience in public accounting in San Diego. Pechacek, formerly a partner with Arthur Andersen LLP, has more than 20 years’ experience in the state and local tax field.

The San Diego World Affairs Council has elected Vickie Butcher as president. Butcher also serves as executive director of Water for Children-Africa and is a member of the El Cajon Planning Commission.

San Diego National Bank welcomes Sergio H. Gallego as the senior premier relationship banker at the San Ysidro office. Most recently, Gallego was employed by the South County Economic Development Council where he was v.p. of accounting and administration.

Sherif Dessouky has joined Lavine, Lofgren, Morris & Engelberg LLP as director of audit. Prior to joining the firm, he worked as a senior audit manager for KPMG International and a CFO with Alitum.

Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center has appointed Dr. Gennadi Glinsky as principal investigator and Dr. John K. Gu as director of bioinformatics and the Genomics Core Laboratory. Prior to joining SKCC, Glinsky served on the faculty of the department of biochemistry at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. Gu was a section head of SNP Genomics and Applied Bioinformatics at Motorola Life Science.

Media veteran Eleanor Novak was promoted to director of media services at Matthews/Evans/Albertazzi. Novak previously was media supervisor for the agency.

Barney & Barney has named Sharon Healey and Kevin Munkholm as account executives in the employee benefits department. Healey formerly was a senior sales associate at Collins and Associates and brings more than 10 years of insurance expertise to her new position. Munkholm brings with him more than 6 years’ experience in customer service.

Community National Bank has promoted Nadia Lee to v.p. Lee, a 15-year banking veteran, joined the bank in 1999 as a community banking officer and was named branch manager in January 2002.

David Casey Jr., a senior partner with Casey Gerry Reed & Schenk, was elected president of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Casey has spent more than 25 years practicing law.

Loews Coronado Bay Resort has named Barbara Johnson Sims as national sales manager and Teri Fichera as access sales manager. Sims has held several managerial positions with the Hyatt Regency hotels. Fichera previously was account manager at The Masters Group Incentives.
