As the lead transactional attorney for Sempra Energy, the parent company of San Diego Gas & Electric, Diana Day can truthfully say she has her hands full. Some 25 attorneys report to her in matters involving commercial, corporate and environmental issues.

Yet Day also has a challenging responsibility outside of her office in Downtown San Diego. She’s the mother of five children ranging in age from 18 months to 8 years. The kids, all girls, were born within a seven-year time span. “With five kids and a job, I have enough to handle,” says Day. Emily, at 8, is the oldest, followed by Anna, 6, Madeline, 5, Mary Margaret, 3, and Katie, 18 months. “We have a wonderful nanny,” says Day.

Day and her husband, Bob Ivanjack, are high school sweethearts (Cascade High School in Everett, Wash.), and recently returned from their 20th high school reunion. Ivanjack works in marketing for a company that sells sports memorabilia

Day’s official title is vice president and associate general counsel of Sempra Energy, which also is the parent of Southern California Gas Co. and Sempra Energy Global Enterprises. She has been with Sempra since 1997, beginning as a staff attorney. Before that, she was a corporate associate with Latham and Watkins in its San Diego office. She holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Washington State University and earned her law degree from the University of Virginia.

Day, 38, and her family live in the Loma Portal area of Point Loma. She is a Brownie troop leader at Sacred Heart Academy in Ocean Beach. Professionally, she is a member of the American Bar Association, the California Bar, and the American Corporate Counsel Association, where she was a board member from 1998 to 2000.

She says her professional job is very rewarding. “I have a wonderful group of people to work with,” she says. “It’s very interesting and challenging.”
