Do you have a mentor in the banking profession? Marc Sandstrom, who I worked for at Great American in the 1980s. He was the number three person at Great American. He helped me understand that you really needed balance in your life and if you’re really organized at work you didn’t need to work 16 hours a day to make the bank successful. He taught me about being organized and efficient. When you have time, what do you do for recreation? I love golf and baseball. I play golf and love to attend baseball games. Five years from now, we’ll be surprised that community banks... ... have grown and diversified much more than expected. Also, that community banks have taken so many of the very best customers from the large banks because the community banks can offer many of the same resources, but with genuine personal service. What keeps you up at night? Having the ultimate responsibility for getting the bank to profitability as soon as possible — and communicating that obligation to employees, customers and shareholders.
