What keeps you up at night?
One of the areas which I personally and professionally find very troubling is elder abuse. I have put together a training class for our staff. I was on (NBC’s) Tom Brokaw news — they came down from L.A. to shoot us and I was on the news for a second in the early ’90s. I will continue to fight against this crime in my personal life as well as in my capacity as manager of San Diego main office.
Five years from now you expect ...
... We will see the current group of local startup banks either be acquired or survive based on their own competitive abilities and strength. That said, in the next five to 10 years after I believe we will see yet another group of local bank startup’s come to market as the cycle repeats itself and San Diego continues to prosper and grow.
Do you have a mentor?
Ralph Allen was the manager of the main office and hired me when I came to work here in 1981. The interesting thing is he was my boss, then we became peers and then I became his supervisor. When he retired, I took his place here, so it was a very meaningful relationship. He is a smart, smart banker and a very gifted guy.
What do you do to relax?
Backgammon. And I’ve taken a renewed interest in working out. I’m riding my bike 40 to 50 miles a week. I swim, hike in the mountains and walk my dog.
