Goodbye, Gustaf. The acclaimed restaurant, Gustaf Anders, which had its humble beginnings in Pacific Beach before moving to the La Jolla Shores area (in the current Piatti’s space) from 1984-1988 and then to South Coast Plaza in 1989, closed its doors Feb. 29 on the 60th birthday of co-founder Gustaf Magnuson. He and chef/owner Ulf Anders Strandberg said they were happy to be retiring but will miss doing what they love to do. I will miss the lamb fricassee with sweet and sour dill sauce and house pickled beets (the beets were killer)

Last month Roy Yamaguchi of Roy’s Restaurant celebrated the 15th anniversary of the opening of the original Roy’s restaurant in Honolulu, which marked the introduction of what would become known as Hawaiian fusion cuisine. There are now 32 Roy’s, including 22 in the Continental U.S., six in Hawaii, three in Japan and one in Guam. Roy’s San Diego location, in UTC, opened three years ago. Yamaguchi has hosted six seasons of the PBS-TV show “Hawaii Cooks with Roy Yamaguchi” seen on more than 300 stations in all 50 states.
