Dr. Lena Rodriguez of the College of Business Administration at SDSU was appointed assistant to the president for executive affairs. She started at SDSU in the fall of 2000, and since that time she has been on the faculty in the Department of Management.

James Boyce joined Landmark National Bank as executive v.p. His 30-plus years of banking experience include 20 years as president, CEO and chairman of Rancho Santa Fe National Bank.

Materials science firm Yulex in Carlsbad appointed latex expert Katrina Cornish to senior v.p. in research development. The company is pioneering a domestic source of natural latex for hypoallergenic medical devices. Also appointed was Edward P. O’Sullivan II, to CFO. Cornish was with the USDA for more than 20 years. Sullivan most recently was CFO and is a founding member of Nextec Applications Inc.

Scott Stanton is a new corporate partner at Morrison & Foerster. He is a specialist in corporate law, securities and mergers and acquisitions and was formerly a partner with Gray Cary Ware & Friedenrich.

Donna Vargo joined the management team of Johnson & Jennings General Contracting. For 11-plus years, Vargo was employed by Roel Construction Co. Inc., where she began as a project manager, was promoted to senior project manager, and ultimately served as executive v.p.

Adrian Barger was hired as director of marketing for M.E. James Surplus Lines Insurance Brokerage to oversee all marketing and advertising functions and manage production. Barger’s experience spans more than 40 years beginning at Allstate Insurance Co. Most recently he worked with Golden Eagle Insurance Co.

Leslie Cochran, CPA, joined the tax department of Lavine, Lofgren, Morris & Engelberg. Formerly with San Diego County, she will work with the firm’s audit team with manufacturing and biotech clients.

Michael Calvelli, a 20-year veteran of the financial services industry, was named president and CEO of Advanced Financial Solutions, a new San Diego company. Formerly he was with Financial Network.

C. Blair Pruett, who joined Ryland Homes-San Diego in 2001 in land acquisition and project management, was promoted to director of land acquisition. Richard J. Schroeder, an 11-year veteran of the home-building industry, was promoted by Ryland Homes-San Diego to v.p.-division manager. He joined the firm in 2002 to head the land acquisition department.

Two new employees at Gafcon are Glen Erbe, senior quality assurance/quality control consultant, and Luella Greco, assistant project manager. Erbe, with six years of experience, formerly owned his own construction business. Greco formerly worked for the city of San Diego.

Robert Morse, who specializes in commercial property investment sales and leasing, joined the La Jolla office of GVA IPC as a senior associate. Morse worked for NSI Communications and for Conexant in San Diego.

Debra Thomas joined Union Bank of California as v.p. and senior relationship manager of its private bank office located Downtown. She was a v.p. in the private bank operations of Bank of America and also worked in the private banking group at Wells Fargo.

Barnhart Inc. promoted Suresh Rayana to v.p., preconstruction services and estimating. Suresh has more than 15 years of experience and was formerly a chief estimator for Barnhart.

Ben Lastimado, a former college administrator in the state of Washington, is the new vice chancellor of human resources for the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. Lastimado, who has a doctorate in educational leadership from Seattle University, was chosen following a nationwide search.

San Diego National Bank appointed Joe Flores branch manger in San Marcos and Erin Kent as branch manager in Clairemont. Flores managed the Clairemont branch for the past three and a half years, and formerly managed California Federal Bank in Norco, Calif. Kent began her career at SDNB in September 2002 as the interim manager of the Encinitas branch. She previously worked at the Point Loma branch. The bank also named Linda Miller, who has 25 years of financial industry experience, as v.p./manager for the La Jolla branch. She is replacing Linda Falconer, who was promoted to regional manager for the San Diego Metro and South Bay areas. Paul Champlin was named v.p., commercial lending officer and sales team manager of the community lending group. He will work out of the new Encinitas branch. Hired as an assistant v.p., commercial lending relationship business, was Shannon Riddle. She formerly owned TransCapital, a financial advice business.

Marcia Corenman assumed the position of development director for Ronald McDonald Charities of San Diego. She is the former executive director for the San Diego Master Chorale and campaign director for the Rancho Bernardo Music Building scheduled for completion next year.

Founding director Louis Campiglia retired from the San Diego Young Artists Symphony Orchestra and named Matthew Garbutt as the new artistic director and conductor. Garbutt is staff conductor for the San Diego Symphony, of which he has been a member for 27 years. He has been assistant conductor and resident Pops conductor of San Diego Symphony, interim music director for San Diego Youth Symphony and conductor for Kids Artz Festival.

Chris Jaczko and Allison Goddard formed the law firm of Jaczko Goddard LLP. Formerly, Jaczko was a partner and Goddard was a senior associate at Cooley Godward LLP. They will continue to focus on business litigation.

She is in the firm’s real estate practice group and also is a member of the golf & resort services team. Andrew Serwin, senior counsel in the e-business and technology group and media law team, is co-vice chair of the California State Bar’s Standing Committee on Cyberspace Law.

Metropolitan Transit System selected Claire Spielberg as COO (Bus), a newly created position. She has been interim g.m. since March. Spielberg has worked for MTA New York City Transit, MTA Long Island Bus and the New York City department of transportation. She started in San Diego in 2003.

CryoCor Inc. hired K. Kay Hannah for a newly created position as v.p., human resources, and Gregory J. Tibbitts as v.p., finance and CFO. Hannah has more than 12 years of human resources experience with start-up companies. Tibbitts, a CPA, has more than 15 years of financial, accounting and administrative management experience, including a past position with Ernst & Young. CryoCor promoted Dr. Ruchir Sehra to the newly created position of v.p., clinical affairs. He joined the company in 2003 and directs all of CryoCor’s clinical studies.

Formula, a public relations boutique, hired Ditas Mauricio as v.p. for its San Diego-based division. She formerly was director of consumer and professional services at PAN Communications. She has been in public relations for 12 years.

Saul Parra was promoted to maintenance account manager at Benchmark Landscape Inc. Edward P. Drobnicki was promoted to maintenance operations director. Both have been with the Poway firm for almost 15 years.

Steven W. Moen has been appointed subdivision accounts manager for New Century Title Co. A veteran of 19 years in the title insurance industry, Moen will oversee the firm’s Southern California Commercial and Subdivision Departments. Moen served as title officer for Stewart Title Co.

Ortega deHarte was appointed executive director of Bravo, an annual showcase for San Diego’s arts community set Nov. 20 this year. deHarte served as executive v.p. & COO of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce from 1996-98. He is chair of Summer Quest 2004, a benefit dance concert for Pediatric HIV/AIDS education, care, and research in California. Chuck Hansen is co-chair for Bravo 2004, which is now in its sixth year.

HomeLife Village Realtors hired agent Susan Sullivan, who has more than 25 years of family real estate experience, to work in the Downtown office. A former Carlsbad Water District board member, she represented the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau in North County and owned and operated Tour San Diego.

Kellee Krause was promoted to v.p. of customer service of the California Region by D.R. Horton, Western Pacific Series, San Diego Division. She will oversee customer service for 10 D.R. Horton divisions within the region. She joined the company in 1999. She will become president of the Home Builder’s Council in 2005.

Paul Dechary joined Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch as an attorney on the business and technology team, and Gary Eastman, Kenneth Tarbet and Richard Campbell joined the intellectual property team. Dechary formerly worked at Gray Cary as an associate in the corporate group, and most recently as an associate for Butz, Dunn, DeSantis and Bingham in San Diego. Eastman was in private practice for the past seven years and was the director of intellectual property for San Diego-based All Optical Networks Inc. from 2001 to 2002. Prior to entering private practice he was an attorney with Brown, Martin, Haller & McClain. Campbell was a partner at Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear. He is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Offices. Tarbet was with Cozen O’Connor Attorneys.
