Lou Ferrero Is More
Than Just A ‘Nice Guy’

Louis Ferrero

His presence is warm and welcoming. His dark suit and black hair complement his friendly, confident smile. Extending a hand, he offers a firm handshake. Louis “Lou” Ferrero, entrepreneur, family man and philanthropist, is a nice guy — the 2004 Nice Guy of the Year for Nice Guys of San Diego. “Lou is one of the best candidates we’ve ever had,” says Skip Giesting, club president. “He’s one hell of a good guy and one of the most generous fellows I’ve ever met.”

Ferrero founded General Micrographics in 1974. He was director, chair and CEO of Conseco Global Investments until his retirement in 2001 and has served on the boards of nearly a dozen organizations. He has used his influence to help raise millions of dollars for organizations like the YMCA, San Dieguito Boys and Girls Club, the W.I.S.E. Center for Battered Women, San Diego Junior Theatre and the Alzheimer’s Association.

To be successful in business, to be involved in the community and to be able to maintain a family is incredibly special, says Ferrero, a husband, father and grandfather. Recalling his growing up years, he says, “We didn’t have very much and we all worked hard and went to school. We were a big Italian family that had a family kitchen and family dinners and I continue that tradition.”

“Lou has done so much for the community, but he doesn’t receive a lot of recognition because he’s a quiet philanthropist,” says Giesting. “He doesn’t do it to receive recognition. But we recognize generosity when we see it.”
