Boxing has met the franchise business. And the franchising devotees of the sweet science believe the real winners will be those male or female who exercise the fight game’s techniques for conditioning and training at The Boxing Club.
“We bridge between the traditional health club, the authentic boxing gym and martial arts,” says Bradley Weinreb, a prosecutor with the state attorney general, who with partner Jonathan Lampitt, a real estate investor, opened The Boxing Club’s sixth franchise, in the Midway area.
“We’re both black-belt martial artists who want to reach a larger clientele than just martial artists,” Weinreb says.
The company itself began in 1998. It was bought by Steven Wade of Wade Capital Management just more than a year ago for its franchise potential. The Boxing Club Holdings LLC now is based in Sorrento Valley and plans to open clubs this year in Los Angeles, the Bay Area and the East Coast.
“The rest of San Diego has been sold out,” says Wade. “This year is all about speed. There are plans for an additional seven clubs in the next six to 12 months. Within five years we hope to have 1,000 locations open.”
Current sites are Encinitas, Kearny Mesa, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Poway and now Midway.
Instruction in kickboxing also is offered by the club through 30 group classes a week requiring hand wraps and gloves. Weights, cardio equipment and more than 30 bags speed, muay thai, uppercut and 300-pound heavy bags fill the club, along with a boxing ring.
“It’s an incredible workout and it’s fun,” says Ensley Elsbach, g.m. of the Midway club. “We’re very casual. It’s not trendy. There’s nobody here with chips on their shoulders.” She says the numbers of men and women are about equal, in a family atmosphere with all ages.
The Boxing Club is at 3165 Rosecrans St. The phone number is (619) 224-2269
