Playing this month, the 16th annual Mainly Mozart Festival consists of 24 performances of 57 works performed by 54 musicians and 10 soloists. This year’s festival features 10 concert venues, four Downtown.
The Spreckels Theatre is out. St. Paul’s Cathedral and Immaculate Conception Church remain. New are Copley Symphony Hall and Aubergine, a restaurant, night club and event center at Fourth Avenue and Island Street.
When Mainly Mozart co-founders David Atherton and Nancy Laturno Bojanic told their 2-year-old Downtown Ambassadors they were looking for a new venue, the group, chaired by Dee Thompson of American Express, proposed Aubergine. The venue passed muster with Bojanic and the maestro, and the two planned an intimate, six-concert Sunday cabaret series for which the musicians will dress casually and interact with patrons.
Aubergine seats up to 250 depending on whether it’s set up theater-style or in tables of four. Pre- or post-concert prix fixe dinners are available June 6 and 27 and must be ordered in advance at (619) 239-0100.
Bojanic credits last season’s 27 percent increase in ticket sales to the Downtown Ambassadors and sales to Downtown residents. “A couple of weeks ago we did progressive concerts over two days in nine different homes, creating awareness and selling concert tickets,” she says. “We had excellent success.”
