Computer Museum
Is Leaving Downtown

After enjoying a Downtown presence for almost three years, the Computer Museum of America is leaving its location at the corner of C Street and Seventh Avenue on March 28. It is returning to its original home at Coleman College in La Mesa, where it reopens May 15.

The space at Coleman will accommodate all the award-winning exhibitions, programs and services offered in the Downtown location and will be open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. The Coleman Foundation and Coleman College are major sponsors of the museum.

“We enjoyed our time here,” says CMA Executive Director David Weil, citing “rising costs and the challenges faced by visitors getting to the Downtown site” as deciding factors for the move.

The San Diego Computer Museum, with more than 2,000 machines, artifacts and library materials, is one of just a few in the world. Its collections have been featured in newspapers, magazines, radio, television and movies. The museum has been in continuous operation since its grassroots founding in 1983 and has welcomed more than 50,000 visitors since opening exhibitions to the public in 1997.

Weil was a major player in the development of the San Diego Children’s Museum before joining the Computer Museum in 1996. He has just completed editing “Leaders of the Information Age,” a 626-page book published by H.W. Wilson, that looks at the lives and work of 250 pioneers in the field.

The museum’s new address will be 7380 Parkway Drive, La Mesa. For information on school tours, memberships or donations, call (619) 235-8222 or visit www.computer-museum.org.
