Shop Talk with Mike Perry

What keeps the president up at night?

In all honesty, I tend to sleep quite soundly due to the fact that I have such a talented and dedicated team of professionals and I’m confident in their abilities to perform. I wake up early each morning (5 a.m.) anxious to start my day because I truly love what I do and who I get to do it with.

Five years from now, community banks will ....

Community banks will continue to play a major role in the San Diego marketplace. This town has supported its community banks for more than 100 years and I donÕt see that changing. I do, however, foresee consolidation among the many banks operating in the market today over the next several years, with only a handful truly realizing their original strategic plan.

Did you ever have a mentor?

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with a number of extremely intelligent and experienced executives in my career, both in banking and the hospitality industry. I’ve also benefited from the insights of some of the finest athletic coaches during the time I played semi-pro ball in how to create and maintain a “winning attitude” throughout the organization. Each of these individuals has helped to shape my management style or “approach” to my job.

Hobbies or relaxations?

I’m an outdoor enthusiast with a passion for fishing. Whether I’m casting a fly into a stream in the Eastern Sierras or trolling for marlin off the coast of Hawaii, you’ll find a big smile on my face. I don’t even have to catch anything, I just enjoy being on the water. Beyond that, I love to travel and spend time with my wife and our 7-year-old son.
