San Diego is lacking just a pastiche of vine-ripened panache to take its place in the world of epicure. With that in mind, Ken Loyst has planned a first edition of the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival for Nov. 10-13 at a stock of premium locations around town:
- The Grand Event at Embarcadero Park North and Reserve Wine Tasting at the Westgate Hotel Downtown.
- Dinners at Azzura Point, Bertrand at Mister A’s, Faz, Le Fontainebleau, Laurel, Osetra, Peohe’s, Roppongi, Ruth’s Chris.
- Classes in wine tasting at the Westgate Hotel and in cooking with celebrated chefs at Macy’s School of Cooking.
- Wines from aperitifs to Zinfandels, from well over 100 wineries throughout California and wine-making countries worldwide.
“We have some of the best labels in the world,” Loyst says. “We’re trying to put San Diego on the map in the food and culinary radar. Other cities put on events like this; San Diego doesn’t.”
The Grand Event from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 13 will balance all the premium wine with delectable cuisine from noted restaurants and gourmet food companies, along with 150 culinary exhibits, art and a live auction.
The Reserve Tasting, from 6 - 8:30 p.m. Nov. 12 atop the Westgate, includes extensive hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction of scores of estate wines, art and more.
Loyst, who has been creating events and trade shows for 30 years, says he has patterned this first local event on the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Festival in New Mexico.
The event beneficiary is the culinary scholarship program of the American Institute of Wine & Food.
Prices vary for each event, including $85 for the Grand Event and $75 for the Reserve Tasting. Festival package prices range from $390 to $1,295.
