I wear a couple of hats,” says Donna Fox. Whether working as a newscaster in New York or on San Diego channels, founding a nonprofit organization or starting her own football team, Fox always has taken a special interest in women and their place in athletics.
She worked as an anchor/reporter in New York and has been a writer/producer for San Diego-based KUSI, KNSD and KFMB. But her influence on sports changed in 2001 when she founded the San Diego Sunfire, San Diego’s first women’s football team. The Sunfire play in several different leagues and is one of the best marketed and best-known teams in various women’s football leagues.
Fox, 39, also founded the nonprofit Gridiron Girls Inc. to promote football for young girls and women. Fox put her media experience to use, creating and hosting her own show, “Gridiron Girls Report,” for Cox Channel 4.
Fox founded 30minutefitness Inc. Downtown. The diet and workout center features a program that moves clients through a 19-station circuit. Fox also is working on another program for Channel 4, “The San Diego Women’s Sports Report,” that will cover women’s sports locally. Although she still is committed to women’s sports, she has left Gridiron Girls and the San Diego Sunfire in capable hands, so she can spend more time with her family.
Fox’s daughter attends La Jolla Country Day, and her son attends Mt. Carmel High. Both are accomplished athletes. “I’m proud that everything I have done I have been able to incorporate my family into,” she says. “I’m glad my children understand that you have to take care of your body and your mind.”
