Four Peacemaker awards will be presented to leaders in the community who have been outstanding in collaborative problem-solving and violence prevention.
They will be given at the 17th annual presentation March 9 at the Marriott Mission Valley, during Days of Dialogue sponsored by the National Conflict Resolution Center (formerly the San Diego Mediation Center). In recognition of the new name, one award is national, the others are in San Diego.
Recipients are:
Judea and Ruth Pearl, Los Angeles County, founders of the Daniel Pearl Foundation for promoting cross-cultural understanding through media internships, Arab-Israeli dialogue and international music festivals to honor their son, Daniel, a Wall Street Journal correspondent who was killed by Islamist extremists in Pakistan in 2002.
Officer Abdeweli Heibeh, San Diego Police Department, for serving as a bridge to better cooperation and understanding between San Diego’s large East African immigrant community and local law enforcement. He is believed to be the first police officer in the United States of Somali heritage.
Marisa Ugarte, executive director of the Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition, for building a network of cross-border government and nongovernment agencies in Mexico and the United States to reduce human trafficking for prostitution, child pornography and forced labor rings.
The Petco Park Facility Access Review Committee for conducting a productive review process with representatives from the Padres, the city and leaders of the disabled community that resulted in innovative accommodations for people with disabilities in the Downtown ballpark.
