Thirty-four financial institutions based in San Diego County were insured by the FDIC at year-end 2004. Included is Legacy Bank, which is merging this summer with Landmark National Bank, and Rancho Bernardo Community Bank, which is being acquired by Escondido-based Community National Bank.

The merger is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter 2005. Established banks number 20. These banks are ranked by return on assets, R.O.A., a common measure of a bank’s profitability.

Point Loma Community Bank was added to the list of de novo banks. It opened in August 2004. Nine banks are 3-years-old or younger. Discovery Bank, Regents Bank and Sunrise Bank moved from the de novo category to the list of established banks.
