Time management is something Lisa Ohmstede depends on. As manager of public relations for Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, budding soccer mom to her 4-year-old son, mother of a 2-year-old daughter and wife to Jason, her life is hectic. Getting enough sleep is a memory.
Ohmstede, 36, works 75 percent of full-time for Scripps Memorial and is on call the rest of the time. The Penasquitos resident recently gave in to minivan ownership and is attached to her BlackBerry.
Ohmstede always is on alert for big crises that could send the county hospitals into emergency mode. Scripps regularly conducts emergency drills and plans for catastrophic events such as terrorist attacks and earthquakes. Drills for disasters like airborne outbreaks are the kinds of worries she has, not only as a public relations coordinator between the media and the hospital, but as a mother. “Sometimes I think, ‘do I really want to put myself in jeopardy, with my family at home?’ But I know this is part of who I am, too. It’s my job to relay information to the public.”
Putting her best effort forward in all areas of communication has resulted in awards from Healthcare Communicators for her public relations and media campaigns as well as news releases. In addition, Ohmstede is a contributor to San Diego Family Magazine; on the programming committee for Healthcare Communicators; involved with the Parent Connection, a nonprofit parenting support network; and a volunteer with the American Heart Association.
Weekends are for family. Between soccer games and housework, Ohmstede says she wouldn’t choose to live any other way.
