Troy Saxton-Getty gives
technology a suspicious eye

< Fred Sainz | Yvonne Silva >

Troy Saxton-Getty’s views on technology might be considered strange for a chief information officer, but only if you routinely drool over whiz-bang gadgets instead of figuring out how to get the most out of them. He says too many green IT managers focus on acquiring the latest must-have technology and miss the point: information.

“I am suspicious of technology,” says Saxton-Getty, CIO of TEC International, an organization of 11,000 CEOs in 15 countries looking for peer insight and improved performance. “It is a necessary evil to deliver information from point A to point B.”

Products are in constant development and customers are the testers. “There’s a lot of hype. Technology. Technology. Technology,” says Saxton-Getty. “More often than not this industry is plagued with technology that doesn’t work.”

Saxton-Getty, 39, has launched several startups including NetConnx Technologies, Integrated Online Solutions, Digital Island and Datron/Transco Inc.

TEC is developing a new level of online collaboration that Saxton-Getty described as a meeting between the dating service Match.com and LinkedIn, an online resource for finding experts, jobs and services. By tracking what its members read and post on TEConline.com, the organization will be able to recommend additional reading a la Amazon.com, or refer questions from members to other members with relevant expertise.

Saxton-Getty says several of his IT employees are part of a volunteer team he assembled after doing some contract work for a charity. “We thought, ‘Gosh, this is a lot of fun. Why don’t we do this for free?’” The team is seeking more charities to help out now.

Saxton-Getty and his wife, Deborah, who works in commercial property management, have four children: Zachariah, 16, Taylor, 13, Paige, 12, and Samantha, 8. Saxton-Getty enjoys flying, fishing and sailing solo and with his family.
