Friends of Downtown wants to put 60 deserving students into San Diego City College for the 2007 spring semester, but it needs $25,000 to do so. The nonprofit organization has set that as a fund-raising goal and will ask for contributions at a free breakfast May 18 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Harbor House Seafood Restaurant, 831 Harbor Drive. The breakfast is underwritten by Shelly Schreiber and Fred Eckert of Chicago Title and the Kate Sappenfield Trust.
Last year, Friends of Downtown raised $10,000 and awarded 30 scholarships. “But we had to say ‘no’ to some students who qualified,” says Edry Goot, chair of the breakfast and treasurer of the organization. “Our goal is to award a scholarship to all who are qualified.” Many of the people the organization hopes to help are low-income single parents with full-time jobs. The organization, says Goot, is the largest scholarship contributor to the college.
Friends of Downtown will interview scholarship applicants and make the awards at a November luncheon at the college. For more information and to make a contribution, call Goot’s cell phone at (619) 805-5607.
