Hot flashes, mood swings, unusual cravings these are some of the things that come with pregnancy. But for Amy Cubbison, mother of three, the natural hormonal changes aren’t nearly as bad as the questions and comments she received while pregnant. Cubbison says by the time she got to the end of her third pregnancy, she couldn’t even look people in the eye for fear of what they were going to say. Fed up with the same embarrassing remarks, Cubbison opened her own clothing line, Leave Me B, featuring T-shirts that blatantly answer any questions one might have for a pregnant woman. The line includes shirts with sayings such as, “Not Fat, Pregnant,” “Don’t Touch My Belly” and “I’m Pregnant, What’s Your Excuse?”
Cubbison says the stress that comes from juggling three kids ages 6, 4 and 1 inspired her to launch her Stressed Out Mom’s line. Her favorite shirts from that line: “I’m a mom, therefore I drink,” “Who are these kids and why are they calling me mommy?” and “This is what I get for screwing around.” Her shirts can be purchased online at leavemeb.com. They cost about $28 per tank to $34 per long sleeve.
Like Cubbison, San Diego moms GG Benitez and Antoinette Gazale, launched Tuni & G, a “mommy and me” clothing line, in August. Tuni & G features T-shirts with interactive phrases for mothers and their children from infants to 12-year-olds. One of the most popular pairs is a T-shirt for infants: “Don’t Ya Wish Your Mommy Is Hot Like Mine?” written in rhinestones, with a matching shirt for mom that reads, “Don’t Ya?”
Benitez, mother of two, expecting a third in April, says Tuni & G was inspired by both her children and a shared passion for fashion with her best friend and business partner, Gazale. Tuni & G merchandise can be purchased at local San Diego boutiques such as JW Tumbles and Cherished Child in Solana Beach for an average of $32 for infants to $34 for women.
