The San Diego Repertory Theatre’s 2006-2007 season scales the coasts from Brooklyn to National City and coasts the scales from Ella Fitzgerald to Hank Williams with stops for Christopher Durang and the Flying Karamazov Brothers. The homegrown 30-year-old theater, helmed by founder Sam Woodhouse, brings up the curtain Sept. 9 on “Ella” with Tony Award nominee Tina Fabrique as the First Lady of Song, note bending and scat flexing through nearly two dozen numbers.
“Miss Witherspoon” is a new comedy from Durang (“Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You”) with Rep favorites Melinda Gilb and Steve Gunderson. Local boy Rick Najera, fresh from his Broadway triumph with “Latinologues” has a workshop performance of his National City-set “Sweet 15 (Quinceanera).”
“Hank Williams: Lost Highway” will star Van Zeiler (who also has portrayed Buddy Holly) as the singer who put the country in hillbilly music in the musical directed by Randal Myler (“Love, Janis”) and penned by San Diego acting luminary Mark Harelik.
The Flying Karamazov Brothers return to the Rep to turn in “Don Quixote” as political satire with a measure of music and more juggling.
The season concludes with two piquant Knickerbocker tales: “Brooklyn Boy” by Donald Margulies (“Collected Stories”) and Adriana Sevan playing all the parts in “Taking Flight,” a brave little play that aims for cheer in the shadows of the Twin Towers after 9/11.
All performances are at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza. For tickets and information, call (619) 544-1000 or visit sandiegorep.com.
