Shop Talk With Steve Espino

What are your hobbies and/or relaxations?

Music. I have played the guitar since I was 13 years old. I still enjoy playing an acoustic or electric guitar, depending on my mood. Travel: my wife Sandy loves to travel and is always planning the next trip. Family: I have a 13-year-old son, Adam, who is active in sports and I have enjoyed helping coach baseball and Pop Warner football.

Did you ever have a mentor and what did he/she teach you?

My personal mentor has to be my father. He died at the young age of 53 and taught me never to take anything for granted. There are people in this world that take energy away from you and others that give you energy. He was definitely one that gave you energy and made you feel good about yourself. I try to do the same with everyone I meet.

Five years from now, community banks will….

Continue to play an important role in San Diego. There will always be a segment of the market that will prefer to bank with a local bank. The successful community banks will have a clear niche and not try to be all things to all people.

What keeps you up at night?

My own snoring. I can’t tell you how many times I will wake myself up at night. If I’m having a difficult time sleeping I just start counting my blessings.
