Major Projects By
R.E. Staite Engineering Inc.

  • Exxon Valdez: After the infamous oil tanker ran aground in Alaska’s Prince William Sound in 1989, spilling millions of gallons of crude oil, R.E. Staite assisted with the cleanup in Alaska, and also removed dangling steel plates from the bottom of the damaged tanker when it was towed to San Diego for repairs at the NASSCO shipyard. Total cost of project: in excess of $7 million.

  • APL Panama: The 880-foot-long container ship became beached just off Ensenada on Christmas Day 2005. The R.E. Staite yard on San Diego Bay was used as a staging area for equipment in the salvage effort, and the company also provided cranes to remove the containers of electronics and car parts on the vessel, along with fashioning a “pulling platform” for use in dislodging the Panama. The ship was finally pulled free in March. Total cost of project: in excess of $4 million.

  • Wharves for nuclear aircraft carriers Stennis and Reagan, North Island Naval Air Station: R.E. Staite created 21 acres of land from dredged material and built two carrier wharves, driving approximately 700 28-ton concrete piles for the project. Staite was general contractor in a joint venture with a Northern California company. Total cost of project: $120 million.

  • National City Marina: Dredged out about 1 million tons of material to create 20-acre marina. Total cost of project: in excess of $5 million.
