Ok, let’s start with the resignation of Carl Schroeder as executive chef of Arterra in Del Mar. Schroeder left quietly in mid-June to put all his efforts and energy into his soon-to-be-opened restaurant in a yet-to-be-disclosed location. There are a few lease loose ends to wrap up before the space can officially be announced, but I can disclose that it is located in his North County neck of the woods.
Replacing Schroeder at Arterra as executive chef is Brian Pekarcik, who began his culinary career locally at Mille Fleurs and Bertrand at Mister A’s. He moved to San Francisco and did a stint at Gary Danko before returning to San Diego and taking a cook position with Arterra. He was soon promoted and served as executive sous chef under Schroeder for the past two years. He will continue to work closely with consulting chef Bradley Ogden (who renewed his contract last month) to continue Arterra’s tradition of featuring farm-fresh seasonal dishes.

Chuck Samuelson sold Cuvee Del Mar to Jaime Osuna, owner of Beachgrass Café in Solana Beach and Honey’s Coffee Shop in Encinitas. So far the name has remained the same. Samuelson consulted on the summer menu and Osuna retained the kitchen and wait staff so the transition went smoothly. Chris Symscek, former wine director, is serving as g.m. Samuelson is staying busy for now with catering gigs and can be reached at cafeman@san.rr.com. Readers may remember that late last year longtime Cuvee chef Brad Luckinbill left to take the chef de cuisine position at Pacifica Del Mar.

Look for a summer opening of Bondi, an authentic Australian bar and restaurant to be located at 333 Fifth Ave. in the Gaslamp Quarter. Bondi will feature Australian design elements, a modern seafood-based menu and beer and wines exclusively from “down under.” Three Australian hospitality industry veterans Julian Heppekausen, David Zampatti and Michael Cameron have relocated their families to San Diego to open the first of what they hope are many Bondi (thebondi.com) restaurants. Christopher Behre will serve as executive chef.

Who says meat is moot? Three well-established San Diego restaurants have recently “reconcepted” to steakhouses. Epazote, the Cal-Southwestern restaurant located in the Del Mar Plaza, underwent a remodel of the patio (the interior will be done later this year), hired Anthony Deluca (Island Prime, Greystone) as executive chef and changed its name to Epazote Ocean View Steak House. Don’t fret, though: Kip Downing, who oversees the management, reports Epazote’s famous shaker margaritas will still be available. Likewise, The Shores Restaurant, located at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, has added the tagline “La Jolla’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant.” The Shores also just finished a cosmetic makeover (paint, furniture, fixtures) and menu revamp. Bernard Guillas will continue to serve as executive chef and Augie Saucedo is still the chef de cuisine, but the menu’s emphasis is now steak. Similarly, the Star of the Sea restaurant, located on the waterfront on Harbor Drive, closed on June 19 for a cosmetic remodel and menu change and will re-open in September as Ghio’s Seafood and Steaks.

In May we wrote about the opening of Paradise Grille in Del Mar and listed its Web site incorrectly. The correct address is paradisegrille.com.

Check out Sushi Fix, a new “quick-service” sushi restaurant in Little Italy. Opened April 1, this is the second “Fix” for owner Andrew Berlin (the first opened in 2004 in Carlsbad). This not-so-little eatery seats 250 people and offers reasonably priced, Americanized versions of popular Japanese dishes and sushi bar items. Look for creative items like “The Redhead Roll” (named by Andrew’s wife, who happens to be a beautiful redhead), a shrimp and krab (for a buck more you can get real crab) roll with spicy tuna and crunchies on top served with spicy sauce. What sets Sushi Fix (sushi-fix.com) apart from other casual style sushi bars is it specializes in catering and will deliver. The Downtown restaurant will deliver anywhere in the 92101 ZIP code, and the Carlsbad store delivers within a five-mile radius.
