The Theatre in Old Town, run for more than a decade by Miracle Theatre Productions, has been put out to bid by the same state bureaucrats who brought you the Plaza del Pasado, that seldom-visited-by-locals successor to the former enormously successful Bazaar del Mundo run by Diane Powers.
The theater, off Juan Street next to the historic stable, has presented several popular and long-running shows, including “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” “Forever Plaid,” “Too Old for the Chorus, but Not Too Old to Be a Star” and “Forbidden Broadway.” Last week it mounted its last show, a high-spirited country/western takeoff on Wagner’s “Ring” cycle titled “Das Barbecü.”
Jill K. Mesaros and Paula Kalustian, Miracle’s producing and artistic directors, say the state requirements are such that they decided not to submit a bid. In addition to a percentage of the gross, the state wants the successful bidder to provide $370,000 worth of capital improvements, bring the late-‘70s building into ADA compliance, take care of the outside landscaping and provide “interpretive programming” in the theater from noon-2 p.m. three days a week. There was one bid.
Expect Mesaros and Kalustian to look hard for another space.
