A Godunov Season Of Mozart And Verdi,
‘Samson And Delilah’ — And Finally ‘Wozzeck’

San Diego Opera general director Ian Campbell has a knack for putting together a fulfilling season of five operas: a Verdi, a Mozart, a little intrigue, a little romance. And something bold. Always.

For the 2007 season, “Wozzeck” makes its San Diego Opera premiere 70 years or so after the Austrian Alban Berg’s opera was first sung in America — and forbidden in Germany. Its dissonance doesn’t strike a chord with too many lovers of Verdi and Mozart. But this production will bring measures of accessibility and creativity.

“Wozzeck” will be performed in English — strong language and all — in one 90-minute, intermission-free burst of solid music. The director of “Wozzeck” is Des McAnuff, the acclaimed artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse. This month, he again is a Tony Award nominee (for “Jersey Boys”), as are “Wozzeck” costume designer Catherine Zuber and lighting director Howell Binkley. It will be McAnuff’s first opera to direct; it turns out “Wozzeck” is his favorite opera. On the international opera scene, this production also will be a draw: Franz Hawlata, who will play the title role, has never sung it in English before. And says he probably never will again.

“Wozzeck” performs April 14, 17, 20 and 22. Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov” is Jan. 27 and 30 and Feb. 2 and 4 with Ferruccio Furlanetto in the title role — the first Italian to sing it in Russian in Russia. Saint-Saens’ “Samson and Delilah” is sung in French Feb. 17, 20, 23 and 25 with Met luminary Denyce Graves in the title role. Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” is March 24, 27, 30 and April 1 and 4, and Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” is May 5, 8, 11, 13 and 16. Both will be sung in Italian. All San Diego Opera productions are at the Civic Theatre Downtown with projected English supertitles. Tickets are $27-$182. Call (619) 533-7000 or visit sdopera.com. Sycuan Resort & Casino is title sponsor.
